Simply the Best HOLDEN CREWMAN 2004 WARWICK HORSE TRIALS FEI EVENT WINS QLD EQUESTRIAN AWARD
What a night for Warwick Horse Trials. Not only did our event take out the top award for Equestrian Qld Event of the year but our lustrous president Simon Goddard also was awarded the Southbank Institute Administrator of the year. A small contingent of Warwick Horse Trils members attended the evening and a great time was had by all. Sonja does Australia proud.
At the end of a challenging cross country, Sweden's Linda Algotsson and her exceptional mare My Fare Lady are the stars of the day. Karin Donckers of Belgium was another high-spirited lady. Her 13-year old Irish thoroughbred Gormley finished only 2 seconds behind the optimum time of 7 min 34 s (0.8 time penalties) taking her to runner up position (47.5 points. Finland's Piia Pantsu on Ypaja Karuso is 3rd with 50 points, followed by 2004 team Olympic champion Jean Teulère and Bambi de Brière, his horse from Sydney, with 52.0 points.
The spectacular performance of Sonja Johnson, winner of the two Australian FEI Eventing World Cup qualifiers at Melbourne and Warwick who has travelled all the way from down under should be given special notice. She performed the competition's fastest cross country (7 min 17 s) making no jumping penalties. Her average Dressage had put her in 29th position (57.4
penalties) but thanks to today's faultless act, she is now 10th.
The highly technical jumping course proved fatal to many of the 30 riders who had reached the last stage of the 2004 FEI Eventing World Cup Final. Rails kept falling down and time penalties accumulating allowed Linda Algotsson to once again win this event. This is the second consecutive time that Linda wins the FEI Eventing World Cup Final. Linda Algotsson is followed by the much acclaimed home nation's hero Jean Teulère, 2002 individual world and 2004 team Olympic champion. He was in 3rd position after Dressage and went one step down on the second day, but a faultless jumping round with only three time penalties made him progress into runner up position. His final score is 55 points. This event was one of the very few Eventing competitions the 15-year old gelding Bambi de Briere has entered since the Sydney Olympic Games where he had placed 4th with another Frenchman Rodolphe Scherer.
Belgium's Karin Donckers, ever so popular among the French public, and her wonderful Olympic mount Gormley come in 3rd only half a point behind Jean (55.5 points) followed by Eric Vigeanel (FRA) in 4th position with 59.5 points. The spectacular progress of Sonja Johnson of Australia, who had been only 29th after dressage, is especially noteworthy.
Congratulations to Sonja and Jaguar finishing 5th place at Pau.
Shane wins Adelaide CCI****
It was a great event for Shane Rose and Beauford Miss Dior who finally won Australia’s most prestigious event Adelaide CCI****. Shane not only won this event but was 4th with his second horse King George. Sammi McLeod & Black Odyssey put in a super dressage test to put them in the lead with 51.8 penelties. Second after dressage was Jessica Irvine-Brown & Belcam Aaberdeen on 54.4 with Craig Barrett and Staccato 3rd. Shane was in 7th place with Beauford Miss Dior on 59.6 penelties and 16th place with his second horse King George.
Cross country day saw Sammi and Jessica retain their positions with the only double clear cross country rounds. There were seven clear cross country of the 18 starters with Shane’s two horses having the next quickest times with .8 and .4 time penalties respectively. The Show Jumping course proved to be very tough with only 2 clear rounds. Kadi Eykamp (Izabella roselini) along with Shane & Miss Dior where the only riders to have no faults which gave Shane a total of 60.4 penalties. Jessica collected 24 jumping and 3 time to finish up on 81.4 and Sammi after leading all the way had a disappointing round with 16 jumping faults, 13 time to give her a total of 80.8 therefore giving Shane the lead by over 20 penalties.
Shane and Beauford Miss Dior were runners up in this event in 2002 so it goes to show that good things come to those that wait.
The CCI** & CIC** saw some Queenslanders compete and our own Warwick Horse Trials members Zack Wilson and Emma Dougall also did the journey to Adeliade to compete in the CIC**. Zack finshed 12th on Billy Blue Jeans after a clear cross country round and his second horse Levi red Jeans had one refusal in cross country to finish 19th. Emma Dougall had a lovely test on Dotcom to be in third place after dressage but unfortunately did not have such a great cross country and show jumping day to finish up in 20th position.
Even though Zack & Emma did not get into the winners circle this time we would like to congratulate them both for there efforts at Adelaide as it takes a great deal of time, dedication and commitment not to mention talent to even qualify and complete at this caliber of event. Well done to both of you and better luck next time.

News from EFA National
Young Rider Squads
Young Dressage, Jumping and Eventing Riders can now nominate to become a member of their respective National Young Rider Squad. Forms (PDF) are now available for Dressage and Jumping, and the Eventing nomination form will be available soon.
Horses and Finger Food
Sonja Johnson, FEI Eventing World Cup winner in Australia and fifth in the world finals, had a bit(e) of bad luck last week. Three hours after she returned home to WA from Adelaide International Horse Trials, a horse accidentally bit off the little finger on her right hand.
The finger could not be reattached and Sonja is now having plastic surgery in Perth. This means she will spend three weeks in hospital, and according to her father Dan, Sonja "is understandably very p***** off".
Her sense of humour not dampened, Sonja asked her father to inquire about her chances of now qualifying as an amputee for the Beijing Paralympic Games .....
National Positions
In last month's newsletter, I indicated that we would be calling for nominations for a number of National positions in the very near future. This process has been delayed by a few weeks as the National Board has asked National Discipline Committees to consider changes to the appointment system.
Since these positions are filled only every four years, a review was in order. Please keep your eye out for notices on this web. We will be calling for expressions of interest for the following positions in the near future:
· Selectors for Dressage and Jumping
· National Coaches/Coaching Coordinators for Eventing, Dressage and Jumping.
· Chefs d'Equipe for all Disciplines (including alternates for local or possibly Trans Tasman events if necessary)
· Section Manager/Chef de Mission for Games teams
· Team Veterinarian(s)
· Team Farrier
In the meantime, Sam Lyle has been elected Riders' Representative to the National Eventing Committee. Gordon Bishop will be the "alternate".

WARWICK HUNTER TRIALS
XMAS PARTY
This year, instead of running the usual Mini Event, The Warwick Horse Trials Club ran an unofficial Hunter Trial. The idea proved very popular with over 80 riders from the EFA and Pony Clubs turning out for a go at some showjumping and cross-country. For many, it was their first time on a cross country round so the day was a perfect opportunity to get out there and have a go.
The day started with the Novice Showjumping. (Novice being the highest grade then working its way down to Pre-Intro.) The Club had decided to use their fancy set of jumps so they caught a few competitors out in the higher and lower grades. But the beauty of the day was even if you were eliminated you could still keep going and finish the round.
At around Midday the cross-country was underway. It was judged on clear rounds and ideal time, but watches were not allowed so that made things more challenging. The course was quite simple, with the aim that everyone could get around without too much trouble. (One Intro rider must of thought it was too simple, and tried to jump a two-star jump by mistake!) Apart from this, there was only a few falls with nobody hurt and everyone making it around safely.
To cap off an enjoyable and relaxing day there was an auction of Horse Trials merchandise which was very entertaining and successful. The presentation was held and then a Christmas party continued. It seems that everybody that took part in the Hunter Trial had a great time and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of getting out there and having a go.

Warwick Eventing Summer School
Don’t miss out on getting instruction from the best riders in the country at the best course in Queensland.
Some of our instructors include, Athens Olympic representative Rebel Morrow, Chris Burton - back in Australia after competing in England (Badminton) & placed 8th at Adelaide, Shane Rose - Adelaide winner, along with several other elite riders will all be in Warwick in January at our Summer School.

Rodeo Street Parade
Warwick Horse Trials entered a float in the Warwick Rodeo Street Parade and our thanks must go to Wally McIntosh for organizing and putting together our entry at the last minutes. Our entry of the three cut out of horse & rider doing dressage, cross country & show jumping won the trophy for best equestrian entry. Well done Wally and thank you form every one for a great effort.
Qld Sports Award
The Holden Crewman Warwick Horse Trials FEI event was also among the finalist at the recent Queensland sports federation awards night for event of the year. We had some tough competition and were up against North Qld Cowboys/Broncos NRL finals fixture in Townsville, the Queensland Reds/NSW Waratahs Super 12 promotion, Opals World Basketball Challenge, Quicksilver Pro Surfing Competition and Netball Queensland Age Championships.
Simon, Cathy, Bill & Sue Goddard, Harry & Jenny Liaubon were among the 900 guests to attend this gala occasion where Quicksilver Pro Surfing took out the honors for Event of the Year.
Considering the caliber of events that we were up against I think we did extremely well to be amongst the finalist.
Course Closure
This year due to our CICW event being held in May and getting the course looking its best it has benn decided at our meeting to close the course for everyone after the summer school. So come along to the summer school for your last chance to jump around the cross country course.
Cross country Training
It was also decided at our meeting that anyone training on the cross country course must now have a committee member present. This is due to the fact that no matter how many time people have been told not to drive vehicles anywhere on grassed areas(roads have been made for this purpose) some people still persist in doing so therefore ruining it for those that abide by the rules. You as riders would be the first to complain if the going was hard at the event due to vehicles driving on course. An on the spot fine will be charged to anyone found driving on the course without permission.
New Years Eve Camp & trail ride.
A overnight camp is planned to welcome in 2005. The camp will be held at Helen halls property ‘Hellhole” Swanfells with a trail ride and picnic on New Years Day. For those wishing to attend please ring Simon or Cathy 07 4666 1647.

Apologies for no newsletter in November. Editors computer had a malfunction and all was lost and a new computer had to be purchased.
This is the Xmas issue and with no meeting being held in December the next newsletter will not be published until late Jan early Feb.
