Text: 2 Samuel 16:5-14; 19:16-23

Thesis: Shimei’s hatred of David was born of rebellion (i.e., an allegiance with King Saul, and now with his defiant son, Absalom); representing both the outer (satanic) and inner (adamic) struggles everyone has with surrendering to Christ’s kingdom and lordship. David demonstrates how to give mercy to one’s persecutor(s) (i.e., Saul, Absalom, and Shimei) and seek a peaceful resolution, even when opportunity, power, and reason (seen in his nephew, Abishai) calls for a justifiable vengeance. Here, David represents the merciful Christ as Shimei embodies all sinners needing pardon and reconciliation.

Title: Paul’s Pride and Joy!

Text: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-20 (key: 2:17-20)

Thread: The Return of Christ.

Tale: The saints in Thessalonica, whom Paul won to Jesus, had a powerful witness for Christ that they often shared everywhere. Paul informs them that they are now and forever will be his “pride and joy.” He rehearses how he led them to faith (a model for us) and how they welcomed the joy of the presence of Christ and the fellowship of His suffering.
