1.Project description:

A 12 month Industrial Placement is available working with the Oral Health team at the WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition. The team is comprised of a group of research scientists and an animal training technician who are responsible for developing and testing methods to measure efficacy of pet food and treats for oral health in cats and dogs. The placement will involve working on a new research project within the Oral Health team to begin evaluatingcharacteristics that drive dental benefits of the future product. Additionally, the successful applicant will spend time working with the CareTreatsGlobal Innovation Centre in Birstall (Leeds), to develop methods for assessing products for oral care relevant physical properties. The opportunity to work with both the Oral Care team and CareTreats team will provide the successful student with a breadth of research experience gained in a commercial settingthat will broaden and enhance their technical scientific skills as well as providing business world insight. To ensure you get the most out of your placement with us, you’ll work with your manager to create a personal development plan, setting yourself challenging learning objectives so that you not only gain technical scientific skills, but you also get the chance to develop professional business skills. In addition, you will receive a competitive salary of £18,000/annum in return for your hard work and commitment.

1.1Requirements:

  • Completed or undertaking an undergraduate degree (minimum 2.i if completed) in food science, biomaterial science, chemical engineering, bioengineering, biochemistry, physiology, biology, or similar.
  • Hands-on experience in a laboratory environment, preferably with physical characterisation experience.
  • Basic understanding in biochemistry and physiology (desirable)
  • Animal handling and training experience (desirable)
  • Must be able to commence placement early June 2017
