Course Description:

Korean IV Honor(I.B.) is a continuing course of Korean III like Korean IV. However, This course is the equivalent of 1 and ½ years of non Honor class. This challenging course will be conducted entirely in Korean and continue to develop advanced skills in reading literature and writing in Korean. Korean IV Honor perfects and deepens students’ knowledge of the Korean language and cultures, also covers Korean classical, modern literature and history. The course objects will continue Korean Ill Honor, enable students to write long essays, poems and understand ancient through modern history, have a deeper perception in Korean culture. Students speak Korean in every class, conduct language projects such as performing plays, film making, culture activities, etc... Evaluation is based on homework assignments, exams, class participation, and daily performance.

  1. Listening skills

Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to follow all classroom instructions in Korean.
  2. Students will understand conversations relating to advanced needs and advanced social conventions.
  3. Students will comprehend some sophisticated topics and readings that have been studied in class.

Activities:

  1. Teacher gives all classroom instructions and directions in Korean & English.
  2. Teacher gives dictations.
  3. Teacher gives short lectures and has the students take notes.
  4. Students listen to recorded voices of native speakers in dialogs and narratives, then answer questions about the selections.
  5. Students ask each other questions about topics studied.
  1. Speaking skills

Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to ask and answer questions relating to advanced needs in spontaneous
  2. Students will use proper sentence structure in spoken language.
  3. Students will be able to form strings of sentences to create paragraphs of speech in conversation, particularly when discussing topics related to themes studied in class.

Activities:

  1. Students work in pairs and respond to a picture prompt by creating a story about it.
  2. Students spontaneously role-play a situation in which they provide information to each other.
  3. Students read a story and summarize it aloud to a group.
  4. Students describe words or objects and their partners guess what is being described.
  5. Students present unrehearsed debates, skits or interviews before the class.
  1. Reading skills

Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to guess many college level words in context.
  2. Students will be able to comprehend paragraphs dealing with personal information, pastimes, families, social issues, professions, etc.
  3. Students will comprehend the main ideas of long stories, authentic text books.

Activities:

  1. Students read articles from the internet and do exercises teaching for context clues comprehension.
  2. Students read articles from periodicals and discuss the context, viewpoint, and cultural features.
  3. Students read long stories and analyze characterizations, themes, and symbols.
  1. Writing skills

Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to complete writing tasks of daily living and social situations.
  2. Students will be able to take notes on familiar topics in Korean.
  3. Students will be able to write story about the socialissues.
  4. Students will be able to respond to a prompt about topics presented in class.
  5. Students will be able to create dialogs and long stories.
  6. Students will be able to write about cultural practices or historical main events.

Activities:

  1. Students keep a diary or journal.
  2. Students write summaries of articles they read.
  3. Students write original fairy tales or legends.
  4. Students write letters to real or imaginary pen pals.
  5. Students write advice columns for newspapers or magazines.
  6. Students write intermediate level poems about their own lives and others’s.
  7. Students write letters to apply for a job.
  1. Culture

Objectives:

  1. Students will develop a sensitivity to and the desire not to offend people from other countries.
  2. Students will know how to be polite, make introductions, place phone calls, carry on transactions required in daily living.
  3. Students will understand the variety of cultures and languages of Korea.
  4. Students will understand the contributions of indigenous cultures of Korea.
  5. Students will understand the role of history and geography in shaping language and culture.
  6. Students will appreciate Korean artists and their works as a reflection of major historical and artistic movements.

Activities:

  1. While reading a text or watching film or video, students analyze cultural aspects that most foreigners would not notice.
  2. Students study culture events of different time of dynasties of Korea.
  3. Students read about minority civilizations.
  4. Students learn about Korean artists and their works, creating and describing an original piece in the style of the artist.
  5. Students learn for basic ancient dynasty changing and recent economical, political and cultural revolutions and compare them with the United States.
  1. Grammar concepts

Objectives:

  1. Students will be aware of placement of adjectives, adverbs and particles.
  2. Students will be able to understand and use properly and effectively different language terms developed in South Korea and North Korea.
  3. Students will be able to form and use formal and familiar affirmative and negative commands.
  4. Students will learn the words that form the past tense of verbs.
  5. Students will learn the words that form the future tense of verbs.
  6. Students will learn the idioms that are commonly used in daily living.

Activities:

  1. Group analysis of textbook passages, articles, or literary excerpts.
  2. Written textbook exercises in which the students is required to use a particular form.
  3. Oral or written opening activities stressing a certain aspect of grammar.
  4. Paired activities with some information gap in which a particular grammar form is required.
  5. Cloze passages with sentences or paragraph in which basic grammar concepts are imbedded.
  6. Response to picture prompts which focus on a particular grammar point.
  1. Honors Work
  2. These students will be required to keep a binder portfolio of their work and reflect on their learning periodically.
  3. There will be a greater amount of homework and faster pacing of class work than in a regular Korean 4 class.
  4. Expectations for the quantity and quality of written and oral work will be higher than those for a regular Korean 4 class.

Methods of Evaluation:

General guidelines:

  1. Chapter tests:

Students will take a test whenever they finish each chapter.

  1. Homework:

Three times a week, students will be assigned practice skills introduced in class.

  1. Class work:

Students will be assigned everyday basis.

  1. Quizzes and presentations:

Student will take regular or pop quizzes whenever necessary.

Student will do both individual and group presentations.

  2. Semester exams (Two final semester exams)
  3. Projects: (Each project for one quarter)

Students will submit 6 projects for one year.

  1. Portfolios:

Students will use portfolios. They are used to verify performance standard attainment. The portfolio will contain cultural entry, oral/written activities, and student self-evaluation for each semester.

Assessments:

Listening assessments:

  1. student- to-teacher and student –to-student dialogue
  2. responding to native speaker, audio cassettes, videos and songs.
  3. dictation

Speaking assessments:

  1. individual interview to assess word choice, intonation and pronunciation
  2. individual or group activities and presentation
  3. role play and dialogues on variety of topics

Reading assessment:

  1. examination for understanding main ideas and particular detail from the text book, internet, magazine, newspaper and literature
  2. oral and written response to determine students’ understanding of vocabulary and grammar in context

3. application of the topic in the reading to new situations

Writing assessment:

  1. teacher and student review of writing using standard writing criteria such as correct word order, verb forms, agreements, variety and creativity of expression.
  2. sentences, paragraphs, journal entries, and essays related to subject will be assessed by specific rubrics
  3. essays, letters, short narratives or commentaries on a work of literature, play will be assessed rating the criteria

Grammar assessment:

  1. grammar accuracy as a part of the grading rubric
  2. tests or quizzes on each specific grammar lesson.

Culture assessment:

  1. culture accuracy as a part of the grading rubric
  2. tests or quizzes on culture learning

Credits: 10 semester unit

Prerequisites: A in Korean 3 or B+ in Korean 3 Honor
