Wall, walk ( Length 5.5 Miles )

visiting Fallowfield. Great views across the Tyne valley to Hexham, and that of the North Tyne

OS Landranger Sheet 87 Start point NY 918693

How to get thereFrom A 69 west of Hexham take A6079 north through Acomb to the lay by beyond Wall Village.

START :- From the lay-by walk back to WallVillage.

Do not take first junction left but next left in the village.

After crossing the green, take the right fork in the road at the end.

Climb the stepped path signpostedto Fallowfield, the start is quite steep. Once on the field at the top, take the path slightly left to a stile.

The path has yellow way markers here and follow them. There are here, superb views across the Tyne valley to Hexham.

Follow the way markers over a stile, through a small wood, across the field, and over another stile into Fallowfield, Turn left at the road junction.

Now take the road right and follow it along until yellow signs direct you left into a field

The track across the field to the right leads to Written Crag.

Beyond the crag go uphill left, and follow the wall there until you come to a metalled road. Take it right downhill and then up again through the gates to the Main Road.

You now cross the "Military Road" The B6318 at the St. Oswald’s Cross.Be Careful

Across the road follow the signpost for Chollerton, you cross “Heavenfield” (the site of a great battle in 633 The sign says 635 but its wrong)proceed up to the Church on the hill ahead.

2

Through the grounds of the church the path leaves by a stile in the far right hand corner of the wall.

The path continues down the hill to the right. Having crossed a stream follow the left side of a field to another stile

Over the stile the path goes slightly left toward some old stone pillars. And then downhill past a disused quarry on the right. The area of the quarry is quite extensive and worth a look.

Past the quarry the path continues downhill and into a field.

Cross the field to the left hand corner and follow the track there down and to the right.

The track goes left. At the end of this track turn right, follow the right side of the field all the way down to join the lane from Cocklaw.

Go left down the lane, go under the old railway bridge and turn left at the main road the A6079

Walk up the right hand side of the road to a way marker pointing down to the river. Chollerford 1 Mile

The mile is a pleasant walk with the River North Tyne on your right.

At Chollerford Bridge it would be excellent to continue beyond along the riverbank, but areas of private land make this impossible.

Turn left away from the bridge, along the "Military Road" B6318 and up to the Junction with the A6079. Turn right, back on the road to Wall.

There is an adequate pavement up the busy road.

A detour is offered about 150 yards past the junction on the left of the road. This is Brunton Turret 26b, Roman remains, part of the Hadrian's Wall.

Returning to the road, make your way back up the hill to the Lay by. (See note at start jan 2012)

Then left and downhill to the Wall village and your transport.
