Wake up and Power up!

LCPS 2013 Breakfast Promotion Campaign

Hello Teachers! We are holding our 3rd Annual Breakfast Promotion Campaign! This campaign is an opportunity to get children and their family members involved in learning how eating breakfast can help start the day off right. During the first half of April, we are enlisting your help in teaching students about the importance of breakfast and encouraging them to enter the contest.

Breakfast Mini Poster: Revisit the Wake Up and Power Up with Breakfast poster that you received last month.

Use these talking points as you discuss the poster:

·  Not eating breakfast in the morning may give you a headache. You may even feel hungry, tired and even a bit grouchy! A full tummy = a happy kid.

·  Your brain runs on energy, just like a car runs on gas. Eating breakfast gives your brain the energy it needs to help you remember what you learn in school.

·  School breakfasts are a great way to grow strong and healthy!

Breakfast Promotion timeline:

·  (April 1 or asap – Present the Breakfast Slogan and Logo Contest flyer to your students and review the rules. It should arrive today from the print shop, only one per class. I will also send electronically. Students are encouraged to work with their family members to help come up with their slogan and logo, but the final drawing must be the work of the student. The winner will win a SUPER COOL string backpack for EVERY kid in his or her school; each adult at the winning school will receive one too!!

·  (April 12) – Collect your students’ entries for the Slogan & Logo Contest. Work with a non-partisan school committee to select ONE entry for the Grand Prize Contest. The selected entry should have a clear, catchy and creative slogan and logo that markets breakfast to other kids. Last year’s winner Zach Bowen from Desert Hills Elementary had the slogan “Breakfast Feeds Your Brain”. Two years ago, J D Soltero from Jornada won with the slogan: “Think Fast…Move Fast…Breakfast”. Each slogan was accompanied by a nice, one color, line drawing that was easy to imprint on a backpack.

·  (April 18) – Send your school’s one best breakfast slogan & logo entry to Barbara Berger at Central Office. You can send in school mail, or drop off in the Health Services office. A panel of judges at Central Office will select the Grand Prize Winner, to be announced by April 24 and the winning entry will be reproduced onto string backpacks before the end of the school year. A fun ceremony will take place to make a fuss about the winner!

Thank you in advance for your hard work on nutrition education! We could not do it without you!! If you have any questions, please contact Barbara Berger at 527-5943, .
