Waiver Exam Fact Sheet

Waiver Exams are offered for the following courses:

Accounting and Financial Reporting (210.620)

The Firm and the Macro-Economy (220.610)

Finance and Capital Markets(231.620)

Customer Focused Marketing (410.620)

Statistical Analysis (510.601)

Systems Analysis and Design (770.002) Fall 2010 only

Decision Models (520.601)

Eligibility:

•Students have the option of either completing the courses or waiving the course by passing the waiver exam. Waiver exams in each discipline may be taken only once.

•Newly admitted students to the Carey Business School who enroll in the new 2 credit course curriculum may take waiver exam(s) prior to the beginning of their first semester only. Students who pass the waiver exam are exempt from taking the course but are required to replace the course with another advanced class of their choosing.

• Students enrolled in Carey’s 3 credit course curriculum have two semesters from the first registration to complete waiver exams and are not required to replace the course credits should they pass the exam.

Exam Format & Student Preparation:

•All exams are computer-based and consist of multiple-choice questions, with the exception of the Marketing Management exam and Quantitative Decision Making for Business.

•In the event of technical difficulty, a paper exam will be given in place of the computer-based exam.

•Time allotted for each exam is two hours.

•Minimum passing score for all proficiency exams is 75%.

• Study guides for each exam are availableon Blackboard on the left column under individual disciplines and on the Student Resources Portal site under Academic Services.

Registering and Scheduling an Exam:

• Students must complete registration and scheduling seven to ten days in advance. Some test times fill up quickly, to ensure your first choice day; we recommended that students call to schedule their testing appointment as early as possible.

• To register, students must submit a registration form or register online, and submit a non-refundable payment of $100 (fee subject to change without notice) per exam to the Records and Registration office. (If the student is not registered for any courses that semester, the student will also be required to pay an additional one-time per semester registration fee of $60.) Any questions pertaining to registration for waiver exams should be directed to the Records and Registration Office at 410-234-9250. Students who are paying with JHU tuition remission should contact their Human Resources Office for clarification regarding the pass/fail policy. Please note the following:

• Waiver exams are to be taken during the semester in which registration occurs.

• If a student is unable to reschedule an exam, an add/drop form (dropping the scheduled waiver exam) must be submitted to the Records and Registration Office.

•Registration for waiver exams does not carry over to the next semester. Semesters are defined as: August (fall) and January (spring).

Parking

Parking is available in the garage under the building at the following rates:

1st hour………$7

Up to 3 hrs….$11

4-5 hours …. $18

Street parking is available in the area, along with other garages with varying rates.

Parking is not validated for student discount before 4 p.m. and then is only validated for students engaging in evening classes at the center. Parking will not be discounted for waiver exams.

The Day of the Exam:

• Students should plan to arrive 10 minutes before their actual testing time. A photo ID (driver’s license or passport) is required. If a student is unable to keep an appointment, he or she must give at least 24 hours notice to reschedule. If a student misses a testing appointment and did not notify Student Services, the student must re-register to take the exam (and pay another $100 fee) and reschedule a testing appointment with Student Services.

• All personal belongings including cell phones must be left with the staff.

• Only pencil/pens and non-programmable calculator(s) are allowed at the testing place (PDAs are not allowed). Scratch paper will be provided and collected at the end of the exam.

• Reproducing and copying parts of any waiver exam is illegal. Cheating in any form is a violation of academic integrity and will result in an automatic failure of the proficiency exam and the student will be subjected to an academic misconduct proceeding. The university reserves the right to dismiss at any time a student whose academic standing or general conduct is considered unsatisfactory.

Exam Scoring:

•Scores for computer-based exams will be available after completion of the test. The minimum passing score is 75%. Students taking the Customer Focused Marketing andDecision Modelswaiver exams will receive their scores five business days after completing the exam.

• Students who pass the exam will have the exam posted to their transcript.

• Students who fail the exam will not have the exam appear on their transcript.

Checklist for Eligible Students Wishing to take a Proficiency Exam

  • Register for the exam you want to take. Payment of the non-refundable $100 exam fee (fee subject to change without notice) and registration fee is due at the time of registration.
  • Schedule a testing appointment with Student Services. (Complete your registration and exam scheduling seven to ten days prior to your testing day.)
  • If you are unable to sit for your exam, call Student Services to reschedule 24 hours before your testing appointment. (Note: the exam must be rescheduled to be taken in the semester you registered). Failure to do so means you forfeit your $100 non-refundable exam fee and you must re-register, re-schedule, and pay at least another $100 exam fee and possibly another registration fee.
