Counting Change

Overall Goal for the Lesson: Students will use the knowledge of coins and bills and be able to make change for various amounts (ie.. $1, $5, $10, $20)

Description of classroom, grade level, and students:

Special education classroom, grades 3-5, 6 students with mild-moderate learning disabilities.

Student Objectives for the lesson. (Given a condition, the students will, to what level).

Given an amount, the student will be able to give change for $1.00 4 out of 5 times.

Given an amount, the student will be able to give change for $5.00 4 out of 5 times.

Given an amount, the student will be able to give change for $10.00 4 out of 5 times.

Given an amount, the student will be able to give change for $20.00 4 out of 5 times.

Length of Lesson: (minutes, number of class periods, or days or weeks needed).

One 45 minute class period

Schedule of Activities: (Break down your activity into a timeline of events. Focus on what students will be doing and what teachers will be doing during each part of the activity.)

1. Review the amounts of the coins and bills up to $10 (including the half dollar and dollar coin) on the smart board. Teacher selects a coin or bill and asks the students the name and amount, students raise their hand to reply.

2. As a whole class, practice adding bills and coins to make an amount on the smart board. Teacher writes an amount on the board. Students, one at a time, move the bills and coins that make the amount while counting.

3. Teacher will then review how you make change (ie.. by subtracting the amount from the dollar amount) students will actively listen and participate in the review.

4. Teacher will split the class into 2 teams of 3 students. Each group will chose a team name. The students will then chose a number 1-10 and the number closest to the teachers number that team will go first.

5. The team who is going first will answer chose an amount and a $. They will then answer the question. If they get it right they will get the points if they don’t they don’t get the points.

7. We will play multiple rounds. The team that wins will get a “prize”.

Assessments: How will these activities be assessed? (Go back to your objectives, what will the students do? Make sure that each objective is paired to an assessment measure that allows students to show it).

Teacher will record students results on a piece of paper with a clip board with each students name on it to ensure they are reaching mastery.

Accommodations: How might the lesson need to be adapted for students with special needs?

If there is a student with occupational needs, they will orally express their answers and we will allow them to go to the board and pop the balloon.

Paraprofessionals will be with individuals if needed, such as translators or tutors.

The students will work hands-on with fake bills and real coins while doing this activity.

The students will be able to work with calculators if they need them(on the screen)

Materials Needed: Go through each activity and identify what items (both technology and not) are needed to complete this lesson. Include a breakdown according to individual student or student groups. Include materials that need to be created as well.
