GENESIS CHAPTER 6

VS 1 NOW IT CAME ABOUT WHEN MEN BEGAN TO MULTIPLY ON THE THE FACE OF

THE GROUND AND DAUGHTERS WERE BORN TO THEM.

VS 2 THAT THE SONS OF GOD SAW THAT THE DAUGHTERS OF MEN WERE BEAUTIFUL;

AND THEY TOOK WIVES FOR THEMSELVES, WHOMEVER THEY CHOSE.

SUMMARY VS 1-2

1. There was a population explosion by the tenth generation from Adam,

which included an excess of females.

2. If each family produced only 25 males, each of whom married and in

turn had a family of only twenty five males, by the time of Enoch the

population would be in excess of 25,000,000.

3. Each generation multiplies exponentially and add to that the

population of the previous generations, and by the time of Noah you are

looking at a massive amount of people.

4. The fact that daughters multiplied during this time and so resulted

in an excess of females is noted by the intensive passive of vs 1.

5. There is nothing wrong with what the human race is doing in this

population explosion, they are merely fulfilling the command of 1:28.

6. The term "sons of God" is used only 5 times in the OT, Job 1:6, 2:1,

38:7, Gen. 6:2,4, and the clear usages refer to angels.

7. There is every reason to state that in our verses these are angelic

beings, who are a part of the one-third of the angels who aligned them-

selves with Satan.

a. The clear usages of this phrase document this interpretation.

b. They are in contrast to the daughters of mankind.

c. Verses like IPet. 3:18-20 and Jude 6 confirm their identity.

8. At this point in the A/C all that has been revealed is that the

ultimate victor, Messiah, will come through an earthly woman.

9. Satan has attacked the male in Abel, and God has demonstrated that

the replacement, Seth, would continue the line of Messiah.

10. His attack now shifts to the female, as one segment of the fallen

angels infiltrates the human race via sex with the most beautiful and

desirable of the females.

11. This in effect would neutralize the "seed of the woman" if there

were no true humanity on the planet which had not been tainted by the

angelic infiltration.

12. As they procreated with human women, they produced a race of very

evil angel-men, who were exempt from salvation, for at least two

reasons:

a. They were completely negative, and volitionally rejected the

POG.

b. There is no salvation for angels. Heb. 2:16-17

13. Because they crossed genetic boundaries, their offspring would also

have been sterile, and unable to further procreate.

14. The argument that angels are unable to have sex, is not found in

the WOG, but men have assumed that since they do not have sex in Heaven,

that they cannot have sex on the earth. Matt. 22:30,

a. They do not have sex in Heaven since they are all masculine.

b. Angels are certainly capable of taking human form. Gen. 19:1

15. This event forms the "kernel of truth" which is the basis for

mythology.

VS 3 THEN THE LORD SAID, "MY SPIRITUAL NATURE AS EXPRESSED IN ANGELS

WILL NOT REMAIN IN THIS INFERIOR CONDITION IN MANKIND FOREVER, IN WHICH

CONDITION HE IS STILL ULTIMATELY FLESH, SO HIS DAYS WILL END IN 120

YEARS."

SUMMARY VS 3

1. This verse is difficult to translate and interpret.

2. What is in view in this verse is the new condition which now existed

in the A/C, the formation of the angel-men, and the Divine response.

3. When the angels procreated with human women 2 things happened.

a. They left their lofty estate as celibate spirits. Jude 6

b. In the union of their spiritual nature and the fleshly nature of

men, they defiled their nature.

4. God decrees that this aberration will not be granted an indefinite

time on planet earth, but fixes their destruction in a period of 120

years.

5. This allows a period of grace, which always precedes God's judgment.

6. These angel-men were still fleshly and still subject to the plight

of all flesh, physical death.

7. The angelic infiltration had been going on for some time when God

makes this announcement, for how long, we do not know.

8. By the time of the flood, there was no segment of the human

population, with the exception of Noah and his family, which had not

been affected by this.

VS 4 THE NEPHILIM WERE ON THE EARTH IN THOSE DAYS, AND ALSO AFTERWARD,

WHEN THE SONS OF GOD CAME IN TO THE DAUGHTERS OF MANKIND, AND THEY BORE

CHILDREN TO THEM. THEY WERE THE MIGHTY MEN WHO WERE OF OLD, MEN OF

RENOWN.

SUMMARY VS 4

1. This verse documents the condition, which was quite widespread in

that time, gigantism.

2. This was quite commonplace before the flood, and continued in some

measure after the flood, partly due to the excellent genetics, and

partly due to the wonderful environment.

3. One segment of the giant society which existed was the offspring of

the union of angels and women.

4. These angel-men were larger, stronger, smarter, and certainly more

evil than their human counterparts; they were the most powerful men to

ever live on this planet.

5. Their reputations and exploits not only had survived until the time

of Moses, they continue to exist today in the mythological tales of

various cultures.

6. The notion of gods taking human women, sometimes against their will,

and procreating fabulous super heroes is commonplace in mythology.

7. Zeus spent most of his time seducing human women, by taking various

forms and guises, is related in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey.

8. The offspring of these unions between gods and women were men such

as Hercules, Jason, Perseus, the Amazons, etc.

VS 5 THEN THE LORD SAW THAT THE WICKEDNESS OF MAN WAS GREAT ON THE

EARTH, AND THAT EVERY INTENT OF THE THOUGHTS OF HIS HEART WAS ONLY EVIL

CONTINUALLY.

VS 6 AND THE LORD WAS SORRY THAT HE HAD MADE MAN ON THE EARTH AND HE

WAS GRIEVED IN HIS HEART.

VS 7 AND THE LORD SAID, "I WILL BLOT OUT MAN FROM THE FACE OF THE LAND,

FROM MAN TO ANIMALS TO CREEPING THINGS AND TO THE BIRDS OF THE SKY; FOR

I AM SORRY THAT I HAVE MADE THEM."

SUMMARY VS 5-7

1. Omniscience notes the current state of mankind which existed just

prior to the flood, including:

a. angelic infiltration.

b. maximum evil on the part of the human population.

c. widespread negative volition, with very few believers.

2. The evil of mankind is observed in the intermarriage with the

angels, and the revelation here of their thought processes.

3. While it has been stated that the angels took wives from all they

chose, there is no indication that many, if not most, of these women

were willing participants in this activity.

4. Every sort of evil existed on the planet, including; anarchy,

violence, immorality, debauchery, hatred, murder, rape , etc.

5. Divine institution #4, government, did not exist before this time,

and when we tire of it, we should consider the life before the flood,

when men were without any sort of restraints on their STA activity.

6. These people had degenerated to the point where they were not happy

unless they were involved in the formation, education, consummation, and

promulgation of evil.

7. They spent their time devising and fulfilling their desires in

regard to the pursuit of evil.

8. This civilization was characterized by a populace who had too much

time on their hands, bored, highly intelligent and cultured, with a

propensity for pursuing evil.

9. Add to this situation, the angel-men and their Satanic viewpoint,

and you quickly arrive at an irretrievable situation, since these people

did not resist evil, they welcomed it.

10. The anthropopathism of vs 6 does not mean that God has ceased to be

perfect and/or immutable, but informs us that a new policy for dealing

with mankind is to be followed.

11. +R is the attribute which is in view, and this expresses the Divine

displeasure at the activity which He observed.

12. Justice decrees that the only righteous thing to do is to rid the

planet of the vermin which now inhabits it.

13. The animal kingdom will share in the judgment which is coming on

the planet, the only exception being aquatic life.

VS 8 BUT NOAH FOUND GRACE IN THE EYES OF THE LORD.

VS 9 THESE ARE THE HISTORIES OF NOAH. NOAH WAS A RIGHTEOUS MAN,

HE BECAME BLAMELESS IN HIS GENERATION; NOAH WALKED WITH GOD.

VS 10 AND NOAH BECAME THE FATHER OF THREE SONS: SHEM, HAM, AND JAPHETH.

SUMMARY VS 8-10

1. We are introduced to the one exception to the decision of elim-

inating man from the earth, Noah is the only man prepared and qualified

for the crisis.

2. Just as omniscience is cognizant of the evil of the antediluvian

society, it is also aware of the righteous man who adheres to the will

of God.

3. God will deliver what each one deserves: for the evil, a cata-

strophic judgment, for Noah an incredible deliverance.

4. In vs 9 we are given the credentials which set Noah apart in his

time:

a. Not only was he a believer, he was an obedient believer Ph2.

b. He was unaffected by the angelic infiltration, and genetically

pure.

c. He was a mature believer who, like Enoch, continually walked

with God.

5. This condition brings grace from God while all those around him are

the recipients of God's wrath.

6. His three sons are named here:

a. Japheth was actually the firstborn.

b. Shem was the middle son through whom the line of Messiah passed.

c. Ham was the youngest.

VS 11 NOW THE EARTH WAS CORRUPT IN THE SIGHT OF GOD, AND THE EARTH WAS

FILLED WITH VIOLENCE.

VS 12 AND GOD LOOKED ON THE EARTH, AND BEHOLD, IT WAS CORRUPT; FOR ALL

FLESH HAD CORRUPTED THEIR WAY UPON THE EARTH.

SUMMARY VS 11-12

1. The conditions which existed on the inhabited earth, which still was

comprised of only one land mass and one large ocean, are here

reiterated.

2. The human race had been so completely infected with the angelic

infiltration, that pure genetic reproduction was rapidly becoming an

impossibility.

3. The violence of Cain and Lamech had now grown to universal

proportions, and oppression and cruelty existed without restraint.

4. No regard for property, possessions, human rights, or even human

life existed, and man has in 10 generations been reduced to survival of

the fittest, and "might makes right".

VS 13 THEN GOD SAID TO NOAH, "THE END OF ALL FLESH HAS COME BEFORE ME;

FOR THE EARTH IS FILLED WITH VIOLENCE BECAUSE OF THEM; AND BEHOLD, I AM

ABOUT TO DESTROY THEM WITH THE EARTH.

VS 14 "MAKE FOR YOURSELF AN ARK OF GOPHER WOOD; YOU SHALL MAKE THE ARK

WITH ROOMS, AND SHALL COVER IT INSIDE AND OUT WITH PITCH."

SUMMARY VS 13-14

1. Approximately 100 years before the flood, God communicates His plan

to Noah, the only one qualified in his generation to receive the grace

of God.

2. God does not desire for the adjusted believer to be in the dark

regarding prophetic events, so He announces to Noah the cataclysmic

judgment which is to come.

3. The primary reason for the flood is here stated as "them", or the

angel-men who were in large measure responsible for the conditions which

existed on the planet.

4. Whether it was due to impossibility, or to the universal negative

volition of the angel-men, no salvation is provided or offered to them.

Heb. 2:14-17

5. These mighty men ruined the earth both genetically, and physically

through their evil and violence, so God determined to ruin them with a

catastrophe which even their superhuman strength could not withstand.

6. God informs Noah that he is not to be destroyed in the coming

calamity, but is to be delivered, via a floating vessel.

7. This vessel was to be constructed of a specific material, and water-

proofed both inside and out with a tar-like substance.

8. It was to contain rooms inside for its occupants.

VS 15 "AND THIS IS HOW YOU SHALL MAKE IT; THE LENGTH OF THE ARK THREE

HUNDRED CUBITS, ITS BREADTH FIFTY CUBITS, AND ITS HEIGHT THIRTY CUBITS.

VS 16 YOU SHALL MAKE A WINDOW FOR THE ARK AND FINISH IT TO A CUBIT FROM

THE TOP; AND SET THE DOOR OF THE ARK IN THE SIDE OF IT; YOU SHALL MAKE

IT WITH LOWER, SECOND, AND THIRD DECKS."

SUMMARY VS 15-16

1. The size of the ark is specified for Noah, 450 x 75 x 45 feet.

2. It was to contain a window for light on the top side of the ark, and

only one entrance or door in the side of the ark.

3. Internally it was to contain lower, second and third decks.

4. The ark was similar in size to a modern day ocean liner, capable of

withstanding tremendous forces, and bearing its inhabitants safely

through the coming cataclysm.

5. The dimensions of the ark:

a. Deck space 101,250 ft.

b. Capacity was equal to 567 railroad stock cars.

c. Tonnage was approx. 15,500-17,000 tons. Compare the USS

Enterprise at 18,900 tons.

6. A type is a representative relation which certain persons, events,

and institutions in the OT bear to corresponding realities in the NT.

7. This is a bonafide teaching aide drawn from the literal events which

are described here in Genesis.

8. The components of this event and their significance:

a. Ark = Jesus Christ

b. Wood = His humanity

c. Noah in the ark = positional truth

d. Flood = great tribulation

e. Those who perished = negative volition

f. One door in ark = one way of SAJG

g. One window above = BD, the light from Heaven.

h. Pitch which keeps out the water = spiritual death of Christ

i. Enoch = those delivered before the trib. or rapture generation

j. Noah and family making it safely through flood = believers who

survive the great trib.

k. Making it for yourself = volitionally choosing to comply with

the plan of God in SAJG

l. The waters of the flood = water baptism

m. The 120 years = Divine timetable for human history

VS 17 "AND BEHOLD, I, EVEN I AM BRINGING THE FLOOD OF WATERS UPON THE

EARTH, TO DESTROY ALL FLESH IN WHICH IS THE BREATH OF LIFE, FROM UNDER

HEAVEN; EVERYTHING THAT IS ON THE EARTH SHALL PERISH.

VS 18 BUT I WILL ESTABLISH MY COVENANT WITH YOU; AND YOU SHALL ENTER

THE ARK--YOU AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR WIFE, AND YOU SONS' WIVES WITH YOU."

SUMMARY VS 17-18

1. Vs 17 emphatically declares that a catastrophe of immense proportion

is coming on the earth, of which, God is the cause.

2. The purpose for this flood of waters is to completely destroy all

that lives on the planet.

3. The evil of the angelic infiltration coupled with the depravity of

the humans on the planet will eventuate in the complete destruction of

their entire world.

4. While animals are possibly affected by the infiltration, they will

suffer by association with the evil of the day.

5. There will be only one exception to the universal destruction which

will engulf the planet, and that is Noah himself.

6. God promises a covenant or agreement with Noah which will arise at

some unspecified time in the future. Gen. 9:8-17

7. He informs Noah that the ark he is to construct will become his home

at some time in the future, and that he is to include his wife, his

sons, and their wives with him in the ark.

8. Noah is the believer with whom God makes promises, a covenant, and

the one who is the reason for the tremendous deliverance God will

provide.

9. The other members of Noah's family were believers, yet they were not

nearly as positive as Noah, but were blessed and delivered by

association with righteous Noah.

VS 19 "AND OF EVERY LIVING THING OF ALL FLESH, YOU SHALL BRING TWO OF

EVERY KIND INTO THE ARK, TO KEEP THEM ALIVE WITH YOU; THEY SHALL BE MALE

AND FEMALE.

VS 20 OF THE BIRDS AFTER THEIR KIND, AND OF THE ANIMALS AFTER THEIR

KIND, OF EVERY CREEPING THING OF THE GROUND AFTER ITS KIND, TWO OF EVERY

KIND SHALL COME TO YOU TO KEEP THEM ALIVE.

VS 21 AND AS FOR YOU, TAKE FOR YOURSELF SOME OF ALL FOOD WHICH IS

EDIBLE, AND GATHER IT TO YOURSELF; AND IT SHALL BE FOR FOOD FOR YOU AND

FOR THEM."

VS 22 THUS NOAH DID; ACCORDING TO ALL THAT GOD HAD COMMANDED HIM, SO HE

DID.

SUMMARY VS 19-22

1. Noah now finds out that not only will he and his immediate family be

passengers on the giant boat, all kinds of animals will be with them.

2. Initially Noah is told to bring 2 pairs of every animal type on the

planet into the ark with him, but as time for the flood approaches God

more fully explains exactly what He desires.

3. Actually seven pairs of clean animals are to go, and one pair of

unclean animals.

4. Noah will not have to gather the animals, they will come to him.
