When contacting volunteers, you need to have a burn boss (ask someone experienced) along with several other volunteers. We recommend trying to have a minimum of two experienced volunteers along with a mix some people with “some experience” and “no experience” into your burn. It is always our goal to get volunteers with no experience out on a burn. Please try to contact some of these folks and ask them if they would like to be on a burn.

When looking for volunteers, you might consider starting with people who live in your area, although many of the volunteers would be very happy to travel in order to participate in a burn.

It is recommended that you call volunteers at least a week or two in advance of your burn to see if they would be available and provide them with the following information:

1. Specific directions to burn site.
2. Planned date and start time of burn. Also, the total estimated time required.
3. Acreage and the type of terrain of the burn.
4. Your method of communicating with them on the date of planned burn to let them know if the burn is a go, or if you have to cancel it due to weather conditions.
5. Remind volunteers how to dress (especially if they have no experience burning). They should wear long pants, a long sleeve cotton shirt, leather boots, and leather gloves. It is also recommended that they bring a hat, eye protection, and a cotton bandana.
