Volunteer Strength & Conditioning Coach – Role description

This is a short-term volunteering opportunity to contribute directly to the physical development of rugby players in Ulster, whilst gaining valuable practical experience in an elite sport environment. This role will support the Strength & Conditioning team in delivering a range of programmes to the Senior and Academy squads. In return, it will give you the chance to increase your skills and knowledge, potentially leading to enhanced career opportunities.

What will you be doing?

  • Assisting in the day-to-day operations, including setting up training and testing equipment, implementing recovery methods and supplement and hydration strategies.
  • Contribute to performance data collection, analysis and reporting.
  • Be committed for furthering your knowledge and experience of strength and conditioning, and be willing to commit to a programme of skills/knowledge development.
  • You will work closely with the strength and conditioning team and liaise closely with other staff/volunteers as needed.

The role will be primarily based at Kingspan Stadium and Newforge Country Club, but may include travel to other regional S&C facilities across Ulster.

You should be able to commit to varied hours, from Monday – Saturday depending on the programme of work for each week. This includes evening, weekends, and bank holidays.

This is a short-term role from March 2018 to October 2018.

Is the role right for you?

To be successful in this role, Ulster Rugby feels you should have:

  • Achieved or be working towards a degree in sports science, strength and conditioning, human movement or a related discipline.
  • Motivation and passion for high performance sport.
  • An understanding of the needs of athletes and coaches within an elite sport environment.
  • An understanding of various sports science and medicine disciplines.

Training and Support

As part of your induction, you will receive your Volunteer Handbook.

Jonny Davis (Head of Athletic Performance) will be your Volunteer Manager.

Amy Graham (Academy Strength and Conditioning Coach) will co-ordinate the induction and education process. Direct and daily support will be continued by the S&C coach responsible for the squad(s) you will be assigned to.

You will also be provided with Ulster Rugby branded kit to identify you as part of the team.
