Post:Volunteer Development Co-ordinator
Duration:2 year fixed term contract
Days/hours:3 days a week (21 hours)
Working pattern to be agreed during normal office hours but will also include some occasional evening and weekend work
Reports to:Chief Executive Officer
Based:Raploch, Stirling, Scotland although travel to all our centres in Scotland will be required (currently Glasgow and Aberdeen)
Salary:£26,523 – £29,583 per annum pro rata
(plus 1% cost of living award from 1 July 2016)
New staff are appointed on the first point of the scale.

SISTEMA SCOTLAND INFORMATION
Sistema Scotland’s core mission is:
- to transform children’s lives with music;
- to empower communities;
- to grow future inclusive orchestras; and
- to focus this work on communities in most need, in areas of deprivation.
This pioneering programme emulates the Venezuelan orchestral system “El Sistema” which has reached hundreds of thousands of children from deprived communities over the last 40 years.
Sistema Scotland delivers its work through the creation of Big Noise programmes within communities, and currently runs three programmes in Raploch (Stirling), Govanhill (Glasgow) and Torry (Aberdeen).

THE TEAM
We currently employ approximately 70 staff across our three centres and Sistema Scotland’s core team. Each Big Noise centre has a Team Leader, Operations Manager (who currently manages the local volunteer team), administrator and a team of part time musicians and support workers. We also have a team of volunteers and cover musicians (freelance) in each centre.
The successful applicant will join the core team consisting of the Chief Executive Officer, Director of Music, HR Manager (part time), HR Assistant (part time), Finance Manager (part time), Financial Assistant (part time), Fundraising Business Development Officer, Marketing & Communications Officer (part time), PA / Administrator (part time) and freelance Fundraiser.
The Chief Executive Officer reports to a voluntary Board of Directors.
1.PRINCIPAL AIMS
1.1To develop an organisational wide strategy, policies and processes for recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers for Big Noise centres across Scotland
1.2To support the Operations Managers at each Big Noise centre to offer high quality opportunities and support to external and local community volunteers
1.3To support Big Noise centres to develop a structure for developing youth volunteering and work experience/placement opportunities across the programme
2.PRINCIPAL DUTIES
The following gives an indication of the duties and responsibilities that the post may involve. The exact nature of these duties and responsibilities will change over time and the post holder will be expected to work flexibly and carry out any work that is reasonably required and is appropriate to the role.
2.1Develop a progression route for volunteers within the programme
2.2Develop a centralised induction programme, volunteer handbook and annual training programme for volunteers
2.3Develop a recognition and awards programme for volunteers
2.4Develop a feedback forum for volunteers, to enable volunteers to communicate regularly with the organisation and have a representative voice at Big Noise and Sistema levels (including when volunteers leave the organisation)
2.5Liaise with the Marketing & Communications Officer in order to gather volunteering news and stories for internal and external publications, and contribute to effective internal communications for volunteers
2.6Develop new approaches and initiatives to volunteering, particularly for community based volunteers
2.7Be a key link with national and key local volunteering organisations and events
2.8Drive best practice within the organisation with regards to volunteering recruitment, opportunities and support
2.9Monitor, review and update volunteer policies and procedures and keep up to date knowledge of changes in legislation and best practice
2.10Liaising with the HR Manager and Big Noise Operations Managers create effective systems for monitoring and recording volunteers training and development.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Knowledge AND QUALIFICATIONS
ESSENTIAL
- Training or professional development in volunteer management
- Understanding of the benefits that a social programme such as El Sistema can have
- Proven commitment to personal and professional development
DESIRABLE
- Educated to degree level or equivalent
- Knowledge of current issues regarding music, community development and education in Scotland
- Training or professional development in project management
- Training or professional development in people management
Experience
ESSENTIAL
- Experience of co-ordinating a volunteer programme, including recruitment and selection
- Experience of designing and delivering training, ideally to volunteers
- Experience of working within a challenging and high-pressure environment
- Experience of organisational relationship management (internal and external)
- Experience of working within a diverse team
DESIRABLE
- Experience of working with young people as volunteers
- Proven project management experience
- Experience of managing budgets
- Experience of outreach work and delivery of community learning and development work
- Experience of working in areas of multiple deprivation
- Partnership working with local, national and international organisations.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
ESSENTIAL
- High level of IT skills, particularly MS Office
- Ability to build and sustain positive relationships with a variety of stake-holders
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage a high-pressure work load
- Proven track record of ability to work as part of a dynamic team
- A passion for music, and belief in the impact and transformative power it has for children and the wider community
- Excellent communication skills with both adults and young people
DESIRABLE
- Experience of designing and creating information for external use (posters, event information etc)
