Volunteer Clinical Faculty (VCF) Info Sheet

Introduction

The UC Davis School of Medicine greatly values our Volunteer Clinical Faculty as important partners in fulfilling our mission to educate young physicians and scientists, deliver high-quality health care to our community, and discover new knowledge that will improve health. Physicians from our community who joinus as Volunteer Clinical Faculty members can participate in many different teaching opportunities and can serve on important committees.

Types of Appointment

Two types of appointments are available in the VCF Series each with different annual requirements. The two types of appointments and their respective requirements are:

  • Clinical Instructor, Volunteer Series – Minimum of 20 hours but no more than 49 hours of Health System and/or School of Medicine service per academic year.
  • Assistant, Associate, Clinical Professor, Volunteer Series – Minimum of 50 annual volunteer hours of Health System and/or School of Medicine service per academic year.

Any service to the Health System and/or the School of Medicine counts toward the annual hourly minimum. This includes administrative duties, teaching, clinical activities, student advising, etc.

Requirements and Appointment Process

The appointment process for a VCF appointment involvescompleting an application withrequired supporting documentation; these are completed in conjunction with an academic department. General requirements for each series include a doctoral degree in one of the health sciences, board eligibility or certification in one of the medical specialties or equivalent postdoctoral training, demonstrated excellence in teaching, and demonstrated clinical competence. To assist each VCF faculty member with their appointment documentation, each academic department has a resident VCF coordinator. Attached to this document is a listing of the current coordinators for each department.
