JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title – Community Development Worker for Camden Disability Action (CDA)

Accountable to: Chair of CDA.

Line manager:VAC Executive Director (Within the parameters of the work plan agreed by the Board of CDA).

Responsible for: Project Staff and Volunteers

Grade:SO2 – Pt. 32

Hours: 3 days/wk. Flexible with some evening and weekends.

Holidays: 30 days per annum (pro rata 3 days p/w)

JOB PURPOSE

To work with deaf and disabled people from all communities, particularly those listed in the Equality Act (2010), living and/or working in the London Borough of Camden, to:

  • Identify and reduce health inequalities
  • Identify and address current gaps in local services.
  • Support and enable deaf and disabled people to actively engage both in their personal lives and in local developments, which impact on the quality of their lives.

KEY RESPONSIBILIITES

  • To support deaf and disabled people in making their views known to commissioners and service providers.
  • To work with deaf and disabled people to facilitate community involvement and ensure that their contributions are valued and addressed.
  • To enable deaf and disabled people who face barriers to community involvement to actively participate in local events and other participation opportunities.
  • To ensure that deaf and disabled people are actively involved in the work of CDA.
  • Effectively engaging with local deaf and disabled people and identifying their priorities and needs and recommending and/or developing projects that promote the well-being of deaf and disabled people.
  • Building positive relationships with local services and work in partnership with them to stimulate and deliver services that are accessible and relevant to the needs of deaf and disabled people.
  • Mapping and making links with existing disabled user-led community and voluntary organisations to ensure that what CDA delivers complements what is already taking place.
  • To undertake outreach work to engage deaf and disabled people, with a focus on young disabled people and disabled people from black and minority ethnic communities.
  • To be responsible for arranging and coordinating events and activities for CDA.
  • Develop funding bids to support services and activities based on the needs identified by deaf and disabled people.
  • To provide support to the Board of Trustees of CDA.
  • To recruit more members to CDA.
  • To provide support to the Centre for Independent Living Consortium.

General Responsibilities

  • To participate in supervision sessions and annual personal reviews.
  • To attend relevant training in order to fulfil the requirements of the job.
  • To participate in VAC staff team meetings as appropriate.

  • To be proactive in keeping up to date with developments affecting your work.
  • To abide by organisational policies, code of conduct and practices.
  • To be flexible within the broad remit of the post.
  • To take direction on projects and priorities from your line manager.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Job Title. Community Development Worker – Camden Disability Action

CRITERIA
EXPERIENCE / Minimum of two years’ experience where skills relevant to this role were needed including management of staff and volunteers.
Experience of working directly with deaf and disabled people and voluntary and community sector organisations.
Experience of partnership working and working across sectors e.g. civil society, businesses, public sector agencies.
Experience fundraising and generating income.
Experience monitoring, evaluating and reporting on multi-faceted programmes.
Experience of motivating and managing staff and volunteers.
SKILLSAND ABILITIES / Excellent communication skills, able to communicate verbally and in writing with local residents, community organisations, the public sector and big businesses.
Excellent computer skills including: office package; databases; websites and social media.
Ability to produce clear and precise written material, including publicity.
Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
Ability to be resourceful and creative in approach.
Ability to take initiative and work as part of a team.
Self-servicing and flexible attitude.
Well organised and able to plan, prioritise and cope with different work streams.
Ability to organize meetings, take notes and write minutes.
KNOWLEDGE / Knowledge of issues affecting deaf and disabled people.
Knowledge of finance and budget management.
Knowledge of partnerships and coproduction.
Knowledge of equalities and accessibility, especially issues relevant to deaf and disabled people.
Knowledge of how to identify and tackle barriers to participation.
Knowledge of monitoring and evaluation.
OTHER REQUIRE- MENTS / Able to occasionally work evenings and at weekends.
Able to travel within the Borough of Camden.
Understanding of and commitment to equal opportunities and practice.
Willing to undergo enhanced DBS check.
