*The B. subtilis MreB sequence was used for a BLASTP query against the set of complete bacterial genome sequences at NCBI (February, 2003). The Tax Blast report was used to organize the results into a phylogenetic context and modified slightly to accord with the scheme described by Prescott et al. (1999). The best matches for each organism were analysed and reported above as a “hit” if the E value score was >e-20. In practice, all of the hits were much higher than this. Length (aa) is the total length of the hit protein and is always in the range of 334–372 aa. In organisms with no hit reported, the top e value scores were invariably <e-10 and corresponded to longer proteins, FtsA, or DnaK.
