Transition Year Girls SpikeBall Leaders Programme 2017/18

Dear Teacher / Coordinator,

This successful and very exciting programme by the Volleyball Association of Ireland and supported by Sport Ireland “Women in Sport” initiative is reaching the end of its eleventh season. It has been an overwhelming success with over 321 Transition Year students countrywide receiving a SpikeBall Leaders Awards Certificate for 2017and over2,300 Primary school students participating in the programme. /

We are now planning for the 2017/18 Programme (subject to funding from the Sport Ireland).

This programme is aimed at girls in Transition Year programmes in Post Primary schools. The aim of this initiative is to establish and deliver a Transition Year SpikeBall Leadership Programme. This initiative will help to develop partnerships between the Post Primary schools involved andlocal Primary schools and/or clubs.

The programme will benefit your school in a number of ways as it aims to:

  • Develop leadership, administration and life skills among Transition Year Students.
  • Further promote volleyball in the local community and Primary schools.
  • Enhance the profile of the Transition Year Programme and your school in the local community.
  • Provide further opportunities for students to get involved in club development in your school/area.

A limited number of schools are selected each year. If your school is interested in being considered for the programme please fill out the Application Form attached and return it to the office byFriday 26th May 2017. You will then be contacted by usto discuss the programme conditions in full.

To ensure that your school has the best chance of being involved in the programme, please return the application form to the VAI Office by return of post.

Structure of Programme

  • The Volleyball Association of Ireland (VAI) will deliver the SpikeBall Leaders’ Award course to the selected Female Transition Year Students.
  • The programme will result in a Volleyball Association of Ireland/Irish Sports Council approved certificate being awarded to candidates who successfully complete the requirements of the programme.
  • Training will be provided on coaching, refereeing skills, administration and how to create and benefit from a local PR campaign.
  • The trained TY Students will then introduce and coach SpikeBall to local Primary schools, over a 6 week period, to students between the ages of 8-12.
  • They may also work with 1stand 2nd Year pupils in their own schools and/or local community groups.
  • The Transition Year students will help organise and run SpikeBall Blitzes (to include local media/guest of honour) at the end of the programme for the groups they have been coaching.
  • There is also a “Certificate of Excellence” for those Transition Year Students who show outstanding leadership throughout the course. These students will be invited to attend the National Cup Finals at the end of the year where they will be presented with their Certificate of Excellence and will also be presented with a certificate honouring their school’s contribution to the Programme.

Key Conditions

  • School must select suitable Transition Year Girls who are willing and interested in becoming good Leaders.
  • School must have a teacher willing to liaise with the VAI TY Programme Team and be a facilitator to ensure the smooth running of the programme.
  • Have a minimum of 3 Primary schools within easy access of your school.
  • Course Fee:€300.00(Non refundable deposit of €80 required on acceptance into the programme).

Returning Schools

  • Returning schools must provide a teacher to co-deliver the course on both days with a VAI staff member. This is with a view to becoming a Spikeball Tutor in your school.
