Volcano Poster Project

Purpose: The purpose of this project is to demonstrate content knowledge regarding volcanoes. In this project, groups will present on a volcano via poster by conducting research online (with parent’s permission)and information gathered from their textbook.

Specifications:

  • Poster can be any size, but no smaller than 22”x28”.
  • Tri-fold posters work really well for this projectwith name of volcano as title.
  • Written components must be typed and larger type is recommended for ease of reading.
  • The poster must be legible from 8 feet away and it should contain at least 4 images from the internet.
  • CITE ALL SOURCES!!!
  • The group member’s names, period, and date must be typed and placed on the back of the poster.

Content: This poster is about the formation, composition and data pertaining to the selected volcano. You will need to provide anywhere on your poster:

  • Name of volcano
  • Latitude and longitude
  • Tectonic plate(s) associated
  • Continent of location
  • Country of location
  • City, village or town near the volcano. If in the US, which state?
  • 3 interesting facts (one per group member)

Science: There are three main questions to answer with this poster:

  1. Which tectonic plates are causing your volcano to form?
  2. What type of plate boundary is crating your volcano?
  3. Describe what is happening to the plates to from the volcano.
  4. Type of volcano: composite, cinder cone, shield, and any other name you research provides.
  5. What type of lava forms your volcano?
  6. What type of eruption does it produce: violent, quiet, both?
  7. What type of volcanic rock fragments or lava come out of your volcano?

Presentation: Effects of the Volcano

When presenting, each group member will share equal amount of time speaking on the following:

a)Who lives near volcano: towns, villages, nobody?

b)Discuss any legends or stories associated with the volcano. IF YOUR VOLCANO DOES NOT HAVE A LEGEND, YOUR GROUP CAN CREATE AN ORIGINAL LEGEND.

c)What is life like near the volcano?

d)When did it last erupt?

Presentation / Each group member shares equally in the oral presentation
Each presenter can be heard to the back of the room where Mr. Contreras is sitting.
Each presenter speaks towards the audience, not to the poster and is not reading from paper or note cards.
