About the Competition

Candidates will be judged on the performance of a solo, choreographed by themselves, their teacher or peer.

The day will consist of a non-syllabus ballet class, rehearsal and performance of solos to an adjudicator and audience.

Solos – Guidelines for Choreographers

  • Choreographers should create an original ballet solo not exceeding 1 minute and 30seconds
  • Steps and movements should be made up from vocabulary appropriate to the candidate’s level
  • The choreography should not make any reference to characters, storylines or films that are still in copyright e.g. Harry Potter, Billy Elliot, Avatar etc
  • Candidates may wear a simple costume and hand held props may be used if appropriate, however, no masks may be worn. Costumes must not make any reference to characters from films or musicals that are still in copyright e.g. Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang etc.

Music – Guidelines for Solos

  • The music should not exceed 1 minute and 30 seconds
  • The music must be taken from a recording which has been purchased legitimately or could be an original composition by the student/teacher or someone who has been collaborated with
  • Candidates must send an exact recording of their music with their applicationby the closing date and also bring an additional CD copy with them on the day, with any cuts or fades already edited in. This should be handed in at registration.
  • There should be no “internal” cuts to the music as this will likely constitute an infringement of copyright
  • The music may be in either CD or mp3 format ONLY.No other file formats will be accepted. No alterations to this music will be accepted after 4April.
  • Things to think about:

How will your solo begin – before music, after music, with music? How will you communicate this information clearly to the sound operator?

  • How does your music end? Remember it is easy to fade out music, but you cannot fade out yourself
  • You may choose any kind of music; however, if your music contains lyrics, this should not include any offensive, sexist or racist material

Observation

An audience of teachers, family and friends are welcome to attend the performance in the afternoon. Tickets will be available in due course at a charge of £6 each including VAT.

Timetable

A draft timetable will be distributed once the entries at each level are confirmed. The final timetable will be sent to participating candidates after the closing date.
