Vocabulary words to know – Physical Education
Aerobic – Exercise that reflects the use of constant oxygen circulation
Anaerobic – Without air
Pulse – The pressure of the blood on the artery wall as it corresponds to you heart beat.
Resting Heart Rate – Your heart rate [taken] as you first wake in the morning.
Active Heart Rate – Your heart rate taken while doing an activity (movement).
Maximum Heart Rate – MHR – refers to a heart rate that should not be exceeded during an activity/exercise; found by subtracting ones age from 220.
Principle ofOverload – increased demands placed upon ones body. (Frequency, intensity or time)
Principle ofProgression – Progressively increasing the amount of work one places on their body because of the natural tendency of the body to adapt. (Overload will progressively change because you achieve a greater level of fitness).
Principle ofSpecificity – Performing specific exercises to improve specific components of physical fitness in specific body parts.
Skill Related Fitness – related to the your skill ability towards and activity. (When someone is a ‘great’ athlete at a particular event)
Health Related Fitness – Any individual, looking at their own level of fitness for an overall state of health and wellness.
Goal Setting – The ability to determine an expectation (end result) and the means to go about accomplishing it. (a plan)
‘FIT’ principle – refers to Frequency, Intensity and Time
- F=frequency – refers to how often you do an activity/exercise
- I=intensity – refers to how hard you do an activity/exercise
- T=time – refers to how long you do an activity/exercise
- T=type – refer to the type of exercise (aerobic vs anaerobic)
Health Related Components of Fitness – (comprised of)
Flexibility – Range of motion possible at various joints.
Cardiovascular Fitness – ability of the heart, blood, blood vessels, and the respiratory system to supply oxygen and necessary fuel to the muscles during exercise.
Muscular Strength – the ability of a muscle group to apply a maximal force against a resistance one time.
Muscular Endurance – the ability to repeat muscle movement over a period of time.
Body Composition – the ratio of fat to muscle, bone, and other tissues that compose your body.
Skill Related Components of Fitness – (comprised of)
Agility – The ability to change the position of your body and to control your body during movement.
Balance – The ability to keep an upright posture, while either standing still or moving.
Power – The ability to do strength performances at a rapid pace.
Reaction Time – The amount of time it takes to get moving once you senses signal the need to move.
Coordination – The integration of eye, hand, and foot movements.
Speed – The ability to cover a distance in a short time.
