Vocabulary: Have students point to, color, or put a chip on the vocabulary word while the teacher orally states the definition.

Vocabulary

Zoo: a park like area in which live animals are kept in cages or large enclosures for public exhibition.

Spot: a rounded mark

Small: not great in amount. Ex. Ant

Tall: large in amount Ex. Tree

Fly: to be carried through the air by the wind or any other force

Put Me in the Zoo!!

Prestory presentation:

Semantic word maps: Have students look at a video of the zoo or pictures of the different animals that live in the zoo. Ask students to name everything that comes to mind when they think of the zoo. (semantic word map on the board)

Vocabulary: Introduce the vocabulary to the class and see if they know the definitions. Write the vocabulary words on the board. Have the students complete the vocabulary activity. Zoo, spots, small, tall, fly,

Students will recognize the colors red, blue, orange, green, and purple. Write a sentence at the bottom of their coloring sheet with a vocabulary word. Have students share their sentence with the class and write it on the board.

Picture Walk: Scan the illustrations and talk about what they see.

During story presentation: Read the entire story.

Poststory presentation:

Wh questions

1.)  What animal is the main character in this book? Leopard

2.)  Where does he want to live? The zoo

3.)  Name 1 trick that the leopard can do. Make spots look like socks.

4.)  What colors can he turn his spots into? Green, yellow, purple, green, orange, red

5.)  Does he end up in the zoo? no

6.)  Where does he finally realize he belongs? Circus

Snack: Have students discuss things that people eat while at the zoo and vote.
