VNIP Quarterly Report January through March, 2010

Within this report we recap the work and planning that VNIP staff and faculty are involved in. While this includes the highlights of time spent in support of our mission and vision, it does not include the many individual requests for information and presentations that arrive via e-mail. Our content and focus continue to be a common concern within healthcare staff development.

Vermont Preceptor and/or Staff Development Instruction/Consulting :

·  Basic Preceptor Workshops occurred at Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center in Windsor on January 8 and 15.

·  Special intensive VNIP course that merged with the Nurse Leadership Summit on March 23 through March 27 at the Grand Hotel in Killington, Vermont. This combined the core preceptor development work with evidence-based instruction, competence development and assessment of new graduates, new hires. We had attendees from Colorado and Kentucky for the combination of the two-day Clinical Coaching workshop and intensive sessions on teaching/learning and competency systems.

·  Presentations offered as part of the Nurse Leadership Summit included Advanced Preceptor Development Courses and Evidence based Competency Programs. Participants came from Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York City as well as many educators and managers from Vermont.

Presentations for specific agencies and/or regional conferences outside Vermont:

·  January 15 – Presentation at Portsmouth (NH) Regional Hospital.

·  On March 10 and 11, presented at the Institute for Educators in Nursing and Health Professions a the University of Maryland School of Nursing conference in Baltimore, Maryland. Content focus included our work in Preceptor and Internship Development, especially pertaining to clinical instruction. The overall focus of the conference was on excellence in teaching with break-out sessions targeting concept-based program structure and use of technology for teaching.

·  Clinical Competence Development Courses

As contracted with New York City College of Technology (NYCCT) Nursing Program, January 25, 26, 27 and February 4 and 5 at college campus in Brooklyn, NY. This work was funded through a HRSA grant submitted by NYCCT Nursing Program and involved several Brooklyn area healthcare agencies and at least two schools of nursing.

Contract Discussions:

o  Army Nurse Corps – no word

o  NYSNA – no formal word on the grant application

o  Kaiser – no further discussion.

o  Centura – 2 of the 10 Centura hospitals have contracted and will run their first pilot this year. It looks like the rest of the system has moved away from the idea of standardization because of budget concerns.

o  A third Centura Medical Center has inquired about site licensing and framework utilization. Contract development has started with licensing pricing shifting to a ‘per Nursing Dept FTE’ structure.

o  Query from Nebraska - The Nebraska Center for Nursing has grant funding from the NCSBN and currently intends to implement VNIP preceptor development. Contract discussions are pending with consideration of a statewide site license that is calculated based on the number of licensed nursed in the state.
