PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Welcome to Fall! We’ve been very fortunate to have sunny weather and students have been able to enjoy their recess and lunch time breaks in T-shirts, shorts and flip flops. But as September came to a close, the rain and cooler weather arrived. Your children have been so helpful to each other – some lending a spare vest or sweater! Some of our intermediate students are avid participants in the lunch hour Intramurals run by Mr. Ireland but many students are keen soccer players and brave the elements. If your child is one of our soccer enthusiasts, please consider sending a second pair of shoes to be kept at school so that their feet stay dry while they are in class.

As you read in our short but important notice last Friday afternoon, we had a bear sighting on school property. The sighting came during the last five minutes of lunch hour, so students were moved inside to their classrooms at that time. The Conservation Officer was contacted and he toured our grounds that afternoon prior to dismissal at 2:45. There was no bear on the property at that time. However, the conservation office advised us that bears have been seen in this area of Coquitlam, and that they will be around for the next five to six weeks. If there is any concern regarding a bear, students will be immediately alerted by very loud whistle and that will be their cue to immediately leave the playground and enter the school. We want to be as prepared as we can, without causing undo alarm for our students. You can assist this by discussing this issue with your child(ren).

We have some staff members to introduce to you!

We have a permanent secretary! Please welcome Mrs. Sandy Hein. She can help you out with just about anything you might need to know, and is the person you’ll be speaking to when you call in to say your child(ren) will be away, late, or you have a message for someone.

As well, we have two teachers in temporary assignments – Mrs. Leona Huggins – Grade 1 (Division 8), (filling in for Mrs. Karin McSorley) and Mrs. Krista Petersen – Grade 2 (Division 6).(filling in for Mrs. Judy Thiessen). Both Mrs. Huggins and Mrs. Petersen come to us with experience at the primary grades. Please join us in welcoming them to the Mundy Road community.

1st Family BBQ & Open House

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the PAC’s Barbeque on September 25th, which was a wonderful start to our Open House. A big thank you to PAC members, Mrs. Dalene Schulz and Mrs. Evelyn Chursinoff for organizing the bbq, as well as to all the PAC parent helpers (and their children) who grilled, prepped, stacked, poured, tidied, and pitched in. For those who were able to enjoy the feast – I think we can all agree it was a terrific way to kick off the Open House, catch up with families, and enjoy some tasty food. If you missed this event – don’t fret – they’ve made plans to have a few more over the year!

Terry Fox Run

The school’s own mini ‘Marathon of Hope’ was held on a very warm afternoon and it was a great to see so many members of our parent and extended family community there. The whole event was coordinated by Mrs. Berry. This was the first year for on-line donations and pledge forms – we are hoping it made collecting donations easy for you. We sincerely appreciate the parent helpers who assisted with the stamping of maps and counting of the completed laps. Thanks to all of you who came to cheer on our Mundy Road students and encouraged them to do their best, whether it was run or walk.

INTERNATIONAL Walk To School Day, Wednesday October 8, 2008

This coming Wednesday, October 8th, it is the International Walk to School Day. Mundy Road is encouraging all staff, students, moms, dads, and extended family that come to school, to walk or ride their bike to school. For riders, please remember your helmets! We’re going to have student leaders at the front door, checking off students from each division who have walked to school. The division with the highest participation rate wins the very beautiful golden shoe trophy. If you have to drive to school due to daycare needs, we are asking that you park your car two blocks from the school and walk with your child(ren) to the front door.

Forms that need to be Returned

Please check over your child’s planner and ensure that you have read and signed the Student Information form, the planner (page 7), and have sent in the planner fee of $10.00.

Dates to Remember:

October 9th -Grade 2’s and students new to our district get their hearing tested

October 13th – Thanksgiving Holiday

October 17th – Interim Reports Come Home

October 24 – Provincial Professional Development Day – Non Instructional Day

Dogs on School Property

We would like to remind all our parents and students that our four legged friends need to be kept at home, or kept in your car, for the times of dropping off and picking up students. This is a School District Policy and as much as dogs are loved and adored by their owners, there are many people who have allergies to dogs, or who have had negative experiences with dogs. Thank you for complying with this policy.

Coffee with the Principal

The turnout for September’s meetings were great! For those of you who are wondering what it’s about, why don’t you join us? This is an informal gathering and for the month of October the dates are Tuesday October 14th and Tuesday October 28th from 9:35 to 10:25.
