Duties: Teach a variety of biology courses. Evaluate student performance, maintain grade book and assign grades. Supervise the activities of graduate teaching assistants. Advise undergraduate undeclared and biology majors.

I have over 30 years of entomological research experience. I consider myself an applied ecologist. My research background is diverse and has included studies of medical, agricultural, and urban pests. The common theme of my work has been the development of integrated pest management programs to control pests. My contribution to these programs has been the study of non-chemical methods of insect control. I have participated in interdisciplinary (and intercultural) research projects and enjoy discussing projects and proposals with colleagues. I am an enthusiastic and experienced teacher capable of teaching a variety of courses. I also have extension experience and have participated in grower meetings and the production of extension publications and videos.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

1990 - Ph.D. Washington State University, Pullman, WA (Entomology)

1983 - M.S. University of Hawaii, Manoa, HI (Entomology)

1977 - B.A. Miami University, Oxford, OH (Zoology)

ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE

May, 2002 – June, 2009 - Chair, Department of Biology, Shippensburg University. Duties: Oversaw the day-to-day operation of an academic department with 18 FTE faculty, 400 undergraduate majors, 57 undergraduate minors, and 45 graduate students (student numbers are approximations due to normal fluctuations). Managed the budget, coordinated departmental committee activities, met with administrative personnel, performed performance evaluations of temporary faculty, non-tenured faculty and staff, conducted summer orientation, developed and implemented an departmental assessment plan, and participated in college governance.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Jan., 1991 to present - My current research interests are ant population dynamics, ant nest thermodynamics, external and internal anatomy/morphology of insects with a focus on myrmecophilus syrphid flies, especially structures which may be involved in the production and secretion of allelochemics responsible for the fly's chemical mimicry of ants, tree fruit entomology and forensic entomology.

May, 1986 to Dec., 1990 - Research Assistant, W.S.U., Dept. of Entomology, Pullman, WA. Duties: 1). Conducted field and laboratory studies to evaluate the potential of utilizing ants as biological control agents in the integrated pest management of pear psylla. 2). Studied the ecology and behavior of ants in pear orchards. 3). Prepared an extension bulletin and educational video. 4). Participated in horticultural meetings, growers workshops and meetings to keep the public informed of our progress.

Major professor: Dr. R. D. Akre

Jan., 1984 to April, 1986 - Research Associate, U.H., Dept. of Plant Pathology, Maui Branch Station. Duties: 1). Performed data compilation and statistical analysis to determine the best regression model which estimated disease progress and developed models to predict disease and insect outbreaks in lettuce and cabbage. 2). Assisted in field and laboratory research programs on insects, plant pathogens, and weeds of cabbage and lettuce plantings to determine the interrelationships of weather parameters and plant maturity to insect population increases and the infection rate of major lettuce and cabbage diseases. 3). Assisted in the publication of weekly newsletters containing insect & disease information for farmers. 4). Participated in grower workshops and informational meetings.

Supervisors: Drs. J. J. Cho and W. C. Mitchell

Sept., 1981 to Dec., 1983 - Research Assistant, U.H., Dept. of Entomology, Honolulu, HI. Duties: 1). Conducted field and laboratory research on the biology, ecology, and taxonomy of whiteflies (Aleyrodidae) found in Hawaii. 2). Assisted in the maintenance of Cambridge Stereoscan Electron Microscope and support equipment, provided technical assistance for parties using SEM.

Major professor - Dr. J. W. Beardsley

Nov., 1977 to Dec., 1980 - U. S. Peace Corps Volunteer, World Health Organization Filariasis Research Project, Apia, Western Samoa. Duties: 1). Studied the ecology and biology of mosquitoes, especially the vectors of filariasis and Dengue fever. 2). Developed and implemented a bilingual (English and Samoan) public health education program concerning mosquito-borne diseases. 3). Taught high school math and science.

Supervisor: Dr. W. A. Samarawickrema
