UCB / Bancroft Library Pictorial Collections / The Bancroft Library Pictorial Collection, comprising an estimated 3 million items in a variety of media, documents and illustrates the history of California and the American West. While there is representation of the entire geographical area from the Rocky Mountains to Hawaii and from Panama to Alaska, the primary area of concentration is Northern California. Media present include original oil paintings and watercolors, drawings, prints, and photographs in every major format and historical process. The development of photography and the growth of the American West are chronologically parallel, which allows the Pictorial Collection to provide a complete panorama of settlement and expansion. Special emphasis is given to the California Gold Rush and 19th-century images of California transportation. Other major subject areas significantly represented in the collections include Yosemite and other wilderness areas; mining in California, Nevada, Alaska, and Mexico; the lumber industry; portrait of individuals prominent in the history of the West; Native Americans in California; early exploration and geographical surveys; California Missions; the Monterey Peninsula; vacation and leisure activities; scenic views and landscapes; major industrial projects (bridge and dam constructions, shipyards, etc.); World War II in California; Japanese American relocation; Chinese Americans in California; and immigrant labor. The Bancroft Library owns some of the first pictures ever made of San Francisco, Monterey, and countless other locations along the Pacific coast and Hawaii. / Bancroft holdings are chiefly original photographic prints, prints, and drawings (as opposed to study and reference copies of originals). They are, for the most part, rare or unique. While some individual images may be present in other UC collections, these will be the exceptions and not the rule. / Use statistics are collected for Bancroft holdings as a whole, but are not specific enough to give reliable numbers for usage of specific pictorial collections. The collections support a high volume of research use, spanning a very large array of topics. It is very difficult to characterize heavy use, or to categorize ?parts of the collection? in a way that would be meaningful for purposes of comparison to other Visual Materials collections. Portraits of prominent Californians and historic San Francisco Bay Area views are consistently requested, as are the paintings, prints, and drawings from the Robert B. Honeyman , Jr. collection of early Californian and Western American pictorial material. Topical areas with consistently heavy use include railroads, Chinese and Japanese Americans, and the Gold Rush. Also, images by major Western photographers are often requested; photographers such as Carleton Watkins, Eadweard Muybridge, and Timothy O?Sullivan. / Research / Yes / Yes / Yes / Yes / No / Yes,

Arranged in the following series: 1. Subject files in alphabetical order (boxes 1-17); 2. Miscellaneous dating guide information (box 18); 3. Subject index to Daily News (boxes 19-20). Notes: The Los Angeles daily news was originally named the Illustrated daily news by Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jr. when he started it in 1923. He copied the tabloid format of the New York daily news, although he rejected lurid and sensational journalism. In 1926 the paper went bankrupt and was taken over by Manchester Boddy, who changed the name to the Los Angeles daily news. He kept the tabloid format, with its heavy reliance on photographs. In 1954 it merged with the Mirror, the afternoon paper of the Los Angeles times, and became the Mirror-News. It lost reporters, columnists, and its more liberal flavor, and ceased publication in the early 1960s. / All / Zoot Suit riots, Chavez Ravine controversy, Misc. / Other, support publication / No / No / No / No / No / Yes, 4/5 negative
