Congratulations to:

  • Professor Sir Colin Campbell, the University's fifth Vice-Chancellor, who was made an Honorary Freeman of the City of Nottingham which coincided with his retirement from office in September 2008.
  • Alumnus Dr Tim Brabants (Medicine) who won Gold and Bronze medals in canoeing at the Beijing Olympics this summer, and alumnus Mr David Florence (Mathematics and Physics) who won Silver in the kayaking event.
  • Professor Terence Stephenson, Dean of Medicine, who has been appointed to the General Medical Council.
  • Professor Peter Rubin of the Faculty of Medicine has been re-appointed to the General Medical Council.
  • Prof Steve Hill, Institute of Cell Signalling, has been appointed the Deputy Chair of the MRC Molecular & Cellular Medicine Board (MCMB) until 31 March 2010.
  • Professor Hai-Sui Yu, the Dean of Engineering, who was awarded the Chandra S Desai Medal at the 12th International Conference of the International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics (IACMAG).
  • Professor Sam Kingman and his colleague Dr John Robinson of the Faculty of Engineering, who won the Environmental Technology Award at The Engineer Technology and Innovation Awards 2008.
  • Ms Shona Powell, Director, and the team at Lakeside, the University's Public Arts centre, which was named 'Best Music and Performing Arts' winner at the Nottingham Creative Business Awards 2008.
  • Dr Aru Narayanasamy, Associate Professor in the School of Nursing has been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy in recognition of his work on spirituality, ethnicity and diversity in health care.
  • Dr Lopa Leach, Associate Professor in the School of Biomedical Sciences, was elected as the Honorary Secretary of the British Microcirculation Society. The term of office is 5 years.
  • Professor Saul Tendler, Head of School for Pharmacy, has been appointed to the BBSRC Bioscience Skills and Careers Panel.
  • Dr Charles Laughton, School of Pharmacy has been appointed to the new BBSRC Molecules, Cells and Industrial Biotechnology Panel.
  • Professor W. J. Morgan, UNESCO Chair of the Political Economy of Education, Director, Centre for Comparative Education Research, School of Education, has been elected to the honorary position of Distinguished Professor in association with the International Institute of Adult and Lifelong Education. This is in recognition of 'commitment to the cause of Lifelong Education and outstanding scholarship.
  • The University was named EntrepreneurialUniversity of the Year at The Times Higher Awards 2008.
  • The Communications Directorate won the Gold Award at the Chartered Institute for Public Relations PR Pride Awards 2008.
  • A film made by VPoint TV, commissioned by the University of Nottingham and funded by the EMDA. The NanoWhat? Film was awarded ‘Best Corporate/Non-Broadcast Programme’ at the prestigious Royal Television Society Midland Centre Awards.
  • Dr Ian Lowndes, Associate Professor and Reader in Environmental Engineering, has been awarded the 2008 Douglas Hay Medal by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining Engineering.
  • The School of the Built Environment andDr Mark Gillott- after the BASF house on campuswasshortlisted in the Sustainability Innovation award category of The Sustainable Housing Awards 2008. The BASF house is part of the Creative Energy Homes project on University Park.
  • The Estate Grounds team who received the Green Flag Award for the sixth year.
  • The Department of Chemical Engineering, which, in partnership with Premier Foods and the Environmental Technology Centre, won the 2008 Innovation for Sustainability prize at the Lord Stafford Awards 2008.
  • NottinghamUniversityBusinessSchool students Mr Chris Skilton and Mr Jonathan Francis who were winners in the 2008 Real World Awards. Chris Skilton was named Socially Responsible Student of the Year and Jonathan Francis was declared Student Entrepreneur of the Year.
  • Professor Michael O'Flaherty of The School of Law, who was re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Committee on nomination of the Government of Ireland, and will serve a second term as Committee Member until 2012.
  • The School of Psychology and the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering, which were awarded Silver Athena SWAN accolades, in recognition of good practice in employing women in science, engineering and technology.
  • The Communications Directorate, whose 'Test Tube' project for NottinghamScienceCity won the award for Best Digital Media at the Nottingham Creative Business Awards 2008. In addition the project won in the 'Best Use of New Media' category at the International Business Awards 2008 in Dublin.
  • Mrs Ann Greenwood (Biochemistry/Chemistry 1976), Financial Director of Campbell Scientific Ltd and Member of Council, who was awarded the Lifetime Commitment Prize at the University of Nottingham Alumni Awards 2008. Mrs Greenwood has served the University as Treasurer of the University Association, member of the Alumni Association Board and Nightingale Hall Association, member of the Careers Advisory Board, Honorary Treasurer of the Students’ Union and member of the Standing Committee.
  • Professor Marion Walker, Professor in Stroke Rehabilitation in the Faculty of Medicine, who - with volunteer Mr Ossie Newell - was awarded a Reach Out prize by the City of Nottingham in recognition of work to develop research and rehabilitation programmes for stroke patients in the city.
  • Nobel Laureate Professor Sir Peter Mansfield, Emeritus Professor in The School of Physics and Astronomy, whose portrait was unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
