Virtual reality as a tool for physical limitations

Executive ABSTRACT
Virtual reality (VR) is a computer-generated simulation for any 3D environment, which can be explored by the user through a VR headset and special controller. Although there are various tools to experience VR and the creative means to construct any environment, this document specifically focuses on a VR bundle that includes a headset (transmitting to the visual and auditory senses) as well as a joystick controller (used for maneuvering throughout the 3D environment). Moreover, this document focuses on the purpose of VR as a solution to the negative side effects of in-home confinement for disabled clients. According to the United States Census Bureau, there are currently over 56 million disabled Americans, which makes up approximately 19% of the US population. This is a significant amount of disabled Americans who would greatly benefit from the use of virtual reality.

INTRODUCTION

This white paper is an argument for Virtual Reality (VR) as a tool that may alleviate the emotional side effects of physical disabilities. Specifically, current trends indicate that VR is, debatably, one of the largest growing technology fields growing exponentially. It stands that some of the largest companies (Google, Samsung, HTC, and Microsoft) are dipping their feet into the world of virtual reality to explore its possibilities. A New Reality© places a focus on that exploration by providing affordable, accessible VR packages for physically disabled clients who may otherwise have their worlds confined to the limitations of their homes. This white paper argues for the benefits, justifications, usability and productivity of VR when offered as a subscription service to physically disabled clients.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Physical disabilities hinder the quality of life an individual may experience. Premature immobility even keeps children and young adults from a fulfilling life because their world has downsized to the confines of their homes. According to a 2014 Disability Status Report conducted by Cornell University, 10.8% of US citizens between the ages 21 to 64 are disabled, with 12.6% of the entire population claiming one or more disabilities. During the most vivid time of life, these individuals lack the mobility, senses, and finances to explore the world around them. A New Reality© offers these individuals a solution.

A NEW REALITY: THE SOLUTION

Virtual Reality (VR) is increasing as a tool in medicine. The experience allows disabled individuals to experience a reality otherwise beyond their physical abilities. Ultimately, each client will experience an alleviation of stress and isolation brought on by in-home care. VR can be an intimating topic, seeming overly technological. To assist with this issue, we will offer in-home setup, as well as 24/7 customer service to ensure each client will feel knowledgeable and in control of their experience.

Currently, there are five well-known VR programs that can be purchased. The five most popular are Google Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR. Each program has a different price tag, its own unique set of features, and different set-up requirements.

HOW WE SOLVE THE PROBLEM

A New Reality© allows our disabled clients to explore an endless variety of 3D environments. Users are free to choose, as well as personally customize, the environment in which they desire. These virtual 3D environments are used in order to alleviate some of the negative restrictions caused by a dominantly in-home lifestyle. Such conditions may include mild to severe depression and/or loneliness through a lack of mental stimulation. The virtual reality service we are offering to disabled Americans ensures that our clients receive the proper mental stimulation as often as they desire. This will be done in order to ultimately alleviate the negative effects in which a disability may have. Through the use of our virtual reality service and a variety of 3D environments, our disabled clients will receive the proper therapeutic release from their daily confinement.
