Virginians face even more restrictive access to vital records. The initial report from the Commission staff was not positive. Please contact members of the Commission with your concerns and support.

Although the official comment period to the Commission has closed, individual legislators will still pay attention to your emails received before November 22.

Please take the time to send an email to the legislators who are on the Commission (at the email addresses below), emphasizing the need for reform of Virginia’s vital records.

Your letter should include the following (please reword if you wish):

I am writing in regard to SB865 on access to public records. I respectfully request that you support the following reforms to Virginia’s vital records system:

1. Family members (liberally defined) should be granted liberal access to “closed” vital records held by VDH.

2. Death certificates held by VDH should become “open” public records immediately since there are no legitimate identity theft or privacy reasons to keep death certificates “closed” and there are legitimate health reasons for any and all family members to have access to this information.

3. Once vital records held by VDH are no longer “closed”, that VDH should be required to turn over the originals of these public records to LVA , which would be authorized to make them publicly available.

I appreciate Senator Blevins leading this important reform effort and sincerely hope that as a member of the Commission you will support and expand on his efforts.
