Mini-Garden Projects
It is time to start putting your record books together; many of you are off to a great start. Remember to include pictures, harvest records, and a story. If you have any questions about your record books, please call the 4-H office. Project books due on October 27th.
4-H Pullet Project Show
Currently there are over 35 4-H members participating in the Pullet Project! The pullets and a few roosters strutted their stuff during the Washington County Fair. Each 4-H member brought one pen of three pullets to the fair on Thursday, September 14th. Thank you to all the buyers at the 4-H Pullet Auction, which followed the show. 4-H Horse Camp
Saddle up and get ready for a great “on horse” weekend-long camp. The camp will be held at the SWVA 4-H Education Center in Abingdon, October 20th – 22nd (Youth must bring their own horse and equipment). During the weekend speakers and instructors will work one-on-one with youth and their horses. Fee includes meals, lodging, and workshops. Pre-registration is required. Registration packet available at the Washington County 4-H office 676-6309.

Virginia "Big Tree" Contest
4-H'ers, we need you to go hunting, not for animals, for trees! Do you
think you can find the "BIGGEST" tree in Washington County? You may
enter up to three trees/one per species (Pine, Oak, Maple, Dogwood, etc.). Start looking
for the largest tree you can find! Where could it be? An overall award will be given to the child who enters and properly identifies the largest circumference tree. Entries must have scientific and common names listed. Exact directions to location of tree required. You may not enter the same tree from the previous contests. Deadline to enter the county contest is November 17th. Winners will be submitted to the state 4-H "Big Tree" website. **Forms and information are available from the 4-H office or over the Internet at http://www.fw.vt.edu/4h.bigtree/youth.htm
Decorated Pumpkin Contest
Start searching those pumpkin patches for the perfect pumpkin and then get creative! The 5th annual 4-H Decorated Pumpkin contest is set for October 25th. All 4-H’ers 5-19 may participate! All cloverbuds will receive a participation prize. Junior and Senior champions in each class will receive $5 voucher. All entries must be received by October 23rd, 4:30 p.m. to the Washington County Extension office. Only one entry per category.
Classes include: Funniest, Scariest, Prettiest, Most Original, and Smallest. No cutting or carving pumpkins, painting and appliqué only. Pumpkins will be on display at the 4-H office through October 27th.
4-H Photography Contest
Say Cheese! 4-H members get your cameras ready. The 9th annual 4-H
Photography contest is in full swing. To enter, merely take a 4X6 or larger picture with caption. Only one entry per 4-H member, photo must be on heavy poster board or matted without frame, pictures must be taken by the 4-H'er since January 1st, 2017 (date photo was taken should be included on the entry form). Call the 4-H Office for details. Entry deadline is November 17th, by 4:30 p.m. to the Extension Office.
4-H ACHIEVEMENT PLANS
It is time to check off all of those 4-H goals you set for yourself in 2016! The 4-H Achievement Plan is a set of 4-H goals to work toward each year of your 4-H career. It isn’t too late to check off the goals you have attained this year and to prepare for next year. Achievement is noted in levels – Cloverbud, Green, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Achievement Plans completed for 2017 will be recognized during the Annual 4-H Achievement Night in January. Get started on this today! (2017 Achievement Plans are due November 17th.)

National 4-H Week is October 8th - 14th. This is a time to reflect on and
share with others the wonderful opportunities that exist in our local 4-H program.

Washington County News as we celebrate October as National 4-H Month!
Tractor Supply Clover Campaign
Stop by the Bristol, Virginia Tractor Supply thru October 15th and purchase a paper clover for 4-H. Proceeds support Washington County 4-H! Let’s show our GREEN!
OUTSTANDING 4-H Members of the Year
Calling all "Outstanding 4-H Members"! This year the Washington County 4-H program will recognize the top 4-H members in the following areas: Cloverbud, 9-10 age group, 11-12 age group, 13-15 age group, and 16-18 age group. 4-H members of the year are chosen based on participation in activities, projects, teams, and contests. Applications are due by 4:30 p.m. Friday, November 17th to the Extension Office. Winners will be announced during the County Achievement Night on January 20th. (Applications available from the 4-H office.)
SWVA 4-H/FFA Livestock Leadership Camp
The 3rd Annual 4-H/FFA Livestock Camp will be held on December 1st – 3rd at the SWVA 4-H Center in Abingdon. There will be a lot of great opportunities with this weekend, including: Livestock Judging & Reasons, Stockman’s Clinic, Livestock Judging Contest, and concert by Will Bundy (4-H Alum and American Idol Star). You may choose to attend portions of the weekend or the entire program. Call the 4-H office for more information 676-6309 and registration packet.
4-H All-Star Applications
Senior members ages 14-19 need to consider applying for the highest honor in Virginia 4-H, that of 4-H All-Star. Washington County 4-H All-Star applications are due October 25th.

Project Record Books due October 27th
You have worked hard on your 4-H projects! Now it is time to record all of your 4-H accomplishments. All Washington County 4-H Project Record Books are due on Friday, October 27th, to the Extension Office no later than 4:30 p.m. You need to include your 4-H pictures, ribbons, certificates, and project sheets. Winners from the county contest will be announced at the Washington County 4-H Achievement Night. You can complete a 4-H project book in 10 different areas:
· Leadership
· Plants, Soils, and Entomology
· Science and Technology
· Animal Science
· Citizenship
· Careers & Economic Education
· Communication & Expressive Arts
· Natural Resources & Environmental Education
· Family Sciences
· Foods, Nutrition & Health
