“The World Food Programme is providing hot meals to patients in six hospitals in Mogadishu. It is maize meals and vegetables and we are providing similar meals to ninety two thousands in feeding centers around the city. People can come there and get that food and many of them do and take it away to share it with their families”.

“What we are delivering is Plumpy Sup, it is a peanut based ready to use food with added vitamins and minerals. We are feeding this to eighteen thousand children under the age of 5 in Mogadishu every day. Our most recent flight has arrived in Nairobi and that food will be destined to Somalia. We have also recently airlifted enough food into Mogadishu to feed thirty thousand children with this Plumpy Sup for a month”.

WFP ACCELERATES FOOD DELIVERIES TO REACH
MILLIONS OF HUNGRY IN THE HORN OF AFRICA
NAIROBI – Since the beginning of July, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has reached nearly 8 million people in the Horn of Africa with food assistance. WFP is targeting 11.5 million people out of more than 13 million people affected by the drought and famine in the region, with governments and other partners supporting the rest.
· Today, WFP is starting a series of nine airlifts to Mombasa, in Kenya, carrying a total of 800 metric tons of High Energy Biscuits (HEBs), enough to feed 1.6 million people for a day. The biscuits are being pre-positioned for onward delivery to vulnerable people throughout the Horn of Africa.
· A cargo aircraft landed in Nairobi on Monday evening, carrying 47 metric tons of high-nutrient Plumpy Sup, enough to feed almost 16,500 malnourished children under age five for a month. The flight, donated by the international mail and express delivery company TNT, departed from Liege, Belgium.
· Over the next two months, WFP is working deliver a total of 2,000 metric tons of Plumpy Sup, 2,000 metric tons of HEBs and up to 10,000 metric tons of Super Cereal by air and road to Somalia to help the hungry, especially vulnerable children under age five. Super Cereal is a corn and soya-based blended food fortified with essential micronutrients, dried milk powder, sugar and fat, used for moderately malnourished children from 6 to 23 months old.
· Between 27 July and 3 August, a total of 86 metric tons of Plumpy Sup were airlifted to Mogadishu. This is enough to feed more than 30,000 malnourished children under age five for a month.
· In Ethiopia, food distributions have started for refugees who have been transferred to the newly-opened camp in Haloweyn. The camp is expected to reach about 15,000 residents by the end of this month.
· WFP is also providing blanket supplementary feeding to all children under age five in the refugee camps and the transit centre in Ethiopia – a total of about 42,000 children.
· In Kenya, the first cycle of August general food distributions has started in the camps for registered refugees. New arrivals receive a one-day ration of biscuits and general rations for 21 days. It is renewed if they are not registered by the end of that period.
· Online donations to WFP’s Horn of Africa appeal have surpassed $3 million, with more than 34,500 donors giving an average gift of about $90 each, through online and SMS donations. Private companies, including Unilever, DSM, Cargill, Bloomberg, National Geographic and Idexx are mobilizing their employees to participate.
· WFP’s Horn of Africa appeal remains $250 million short of current needs, after having received about the same amount in contributions, mainly from government donors.
