VFACTS INDUSTRY SUMMARY-October2013
The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries issues the following summary for the retail sales performance of the automotive industry for October2013.
Key Points:
- The October2013 market of 92,603new vehicle sales is a decreaseof2,981 vehicle sales or-3.1% on October2012 (95,584 vehicle sales). October2013(26.4) had 0.1 lessselling daysasOctober2012, resulting in a decrease of 99 vehicle sales per day.
- The October2013 industry volume is down59(0%) on September2013 (92,662 vehicles). In seasonally adjusted terms the October monthly volume equates to a -3.2% decrease versus September.
- The Passenger Vehicle Market is downby2,264vehicle sales (-4.6%) over the same month last year.The Sports Utility Market is up by 433 vehicle sales (1.7%). The Light Commercial Market is downby 1,046 vehicle sales (-5.9%),and the Heavy Commercial Vehicle Market is downby 104 vehicle sales (-3.6%) versusOctober2012.
- Toyota was market leader in October followed by Holden, and Hyundai. Toyota leads Holden with a margin of 7,601 vehicle sales, or 8.2 market share points.
YEAR TO DATE RESULTS
The year-to-date 2013 market of 942,547vehicles is running 24,289 vehicle sales or 2.6% ahead of the same period in 2012. This equates to a YTD SAAR of 1.133 million vehicles. There were 0.1 lessselling days(26.4) compared toOctober2012,and the daily selling rate has decreased by 99 vehicle sales (-2.8%). The Passenger Market at 469,679 vehicles is down by 3,744 vehicle sales(-0.8%). This equates to a YTD SAAR of 0.563 million vehicles. Mixed results by segment were evident withthe Sports car segment, up 3,695 (20.8%); the Small car segment, up 13,854 (6.6%) and the Upper Large segment, up 1,137(47.9%), whilst the Medium car segment, down9,075(-12.6%); the Large car segment, down 9,406(-18.5%);the Light car segment, down 2,839 (-2.5%); and the People Movers segment, down1,110 (-12.8%),failing to achieve the 2012 volume levels. The Sports Utility Vehicle Market at 276,079 vehicles is running ahead of the same period in 2012 by 20,785vehicles (8.1%), in year-to-date terms. This equates to a YTD SAAR of 0.334 million vehicles. Segments contributing positive results were the SUV Small segment, up 10,852 vehicle sales (21.6%); SUV Large up 2,505 (2.5%); the SUV Medium segment, up 8,939 vehicle sales (9.8%). The only segment returning a negative result is the SUV Upper Large segment, down1,511 vehicle sales (-12.1%). The Light Commercial Market at 170,442 vehicles is running 6,615vehicles (4.0%) above the same period in 2012, in year-to-date terms. This equates to a YTD SAAR of 0.205 million vehicles. This gain was driven by the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4x4 segment which is up 12,027 vehicle sales (11.7%).Segments showing lower results were the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X2 segment down3,343 vehicle sales (-8.2%). The Light Bus <20 seats segment, down 528 vehicle sales (-21.0%); the Van/CC 2.5-3.5t segment, down 1,126 vehicle sales (-8.0%), the Light Bus => 20 seats segment, down 249 vehicle sales (-29.2%).and the Vans/CC <=2.5t, down166 vehicle sales (-5.9%). The Heavy TruckMarket at 26,347vehicles is up on the same period in 2012by 633 vehicle sales(2.5%). This equates to a YTD SAAR of 0.032 million vehicle sales.
MONTHLY RESULTS
The Passenger Vehicle Market is down2,264 vehicle sales or -4.6%. Gains in the Sports car segment, up403 (22.6%);theUpper Large car segment, up 42 vehicle sales (11.9%); and the Large car segment, up 243 vehicle sales (4.5%);were offset by losses in the Light car segment down,550 vehicle sales (-5.1%); the Small car segment, down 4 vehicle sales(-0.0%); the Medium car segment, down2,161 vehicle sales (-26.5%); and the People Movers segment down 237 vehicle sales (-23.8%) on 2012 volume levels.The Sports Utility Vehicle Marketis up433 vehicle sales or 1.7% versus October2012. The lone segmentreturning improved results was the SUV Small up 1,845vehicle sales (44.6%).Showing lower results were the SUV Upper Large down 384 vehicle sales (-31.2%), the SUV Medium down 654 vehicle sales (-6.6%) and the SUV Large segment, down374 vehicle sales (-3.5%). versus October2012 volume levels.The Light Commercial Marketis down1,046vehicle sales or -5.9% versusOctober2012. Segments returning negative results were the Pick-up/CC 4x2 down901(-20.0%); the Van/CC <=2.5t segment updown 100 vehicle sales (-35.0%); the Light Buses => 20 seats segment down21 vehicle sales (-28.0%); Light Buses20 seats segment, down36 vehicle sales (-15.1%); and thePick-up/CC 4x4 segment, down104 vehicle sales(-0.9%). Showing an improved result was the Vans/CC 2.5-3.5t up 116 vehicle sales (10.7%) versus 2012 volume levels. The Heavy Truck Market is down104 vehicle sales(-3.6%), when compared withOctober2012 volume levels.
TOP TEN MAKES
Toyota retains the top sales position in the October monthly market with 18,129 vehicle sales, ahead of Holden with 10,528 and Hyundai third with 8,130 vehicle sales. Toyota, with a market share of 18.8%, holds market leadership in year to date terms.Holden’s October result sees it in second position with a YTD market share of 9.8%, with Mazda in third witha YTD market share of 9.1%. Hyundaiis infourth position with a YTD market share of 8.6% ahead of Ford, with7.7% market share in year to date terms.
