Veterinary Student Internship Proposal from Office of the OIE Delegate

PROJECT TITLE:Assessment of the implementation of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) standards related to Antimicrobial Resistance in the Americas

NAME AND TITLE OF SUPERVISOR: Dr. Andrea Ellis, Veterinary Science Advisor to the OIE Delegate

LOCATION OF PROJECT (CITY):CFIA Headquarters, Ottawa, Ontario

CONCISE DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT: The purpose of the project is to analyze data and draft a report on a survey of the Americas countries concerning the level of implementation of the OIE standards related to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This project is an important part of a Strategic Implementation Action Plan to reduce AMRproposed by the OIE Regional Commission for the Americas in support of the Global Action Plan on AMR.

There are several international standards in the OIE Code for both Terrestrialand Aquatic animals related to the prevention and control of AMR. In addition, the OIE recently released a template for the reporting of antimicrobial use (AMU). The OIE Regional Commission for the Americas is aware that there are varying levels of implementation of the current international standards in the Americas, and the national capacity to meet them. To better understand the current level of implementation of the standards in countries of theAmericas, the CFIA is working with the Public Health Agency of Canada and the OIE Office of the Regional Representative to the Americas in the development and administration of a survey on the current state of implementation of the standards in the Region. The intern will be expected to analyze and summarize the data collected through the survey and draft a report to be presented at the next meeting of the OIE Regional Commission for the Americas in Bolivia in November, 2016. The report will be used to identify gaps in the region and areas where support should be directed to help countries meet the international standards for AMR.
EXPERIENCE TO BE GAINED IN REGULATORY MEDICINE: This project will give the student the opportunity to learn about the OIE, its structure and function, and the process of setting international standards for animal health and welfare. They will also learn about international efforts underway to reduce AMR, the Global Action Plan, and the OIE’s initiatives to address this important animal and public health issue. Through the results of the survey, the student will gain insights into the barriers faced by countries in meeting international standards. They will also learn about the ways these barriers can be alleviated through international cooperation and bilateral technical assistance. Finally, the student will gain valuable experience in the synthesis and communication of information for a multilingual and multicultural audience.
DELIVERABLES:

  • Analysis of survey data
  • Draft report of the survey findings
  • Draft presentation of the findings
  • Present the findings to the Vice President of Science Branch (OIE Delegate) and other collaborators on this project.
