VETERAN’S DAY RECOGNITION CEREMONY

East Middle will honor our own relatives that are veterans and currently serving during a ceremony that will be held at EMS on Tuesday, November 10th at 2 pm. We would be honored to have veteran’s attend with their East Middle School students. Pictures of family members who have served our nation will also be displayed in an “Honor Roll” that will run during our Veteran’s Day assembly and in addition to this their names will be read. Please send in photographs (copies of them are great too!) or submit names of any family members who have served in the military so we can honor them. Homeroom teachers will collect the pictures and information. Pictures will be returned when the display is over. Please see attachment.

CHARLOTTE HALL VETERANS HOME DONATIONS

This year 8th graders will be assembling care packages for the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in Charlotte Hall, Maryland. Over the next two weeks, we will be collecting monetary donations to support this cause. Any donation that is made can be turned into any Social Studies teacher and will be used towards purchasing goods for the care packages.

CANNED FOOD DRIVE

SHOUT club is sponsoring a canned food drive during the month of October. Canned foods collected will be donated to Carroll Food Sunday. Last year SHOUT club raised 480 lbs. of canned food that filled up the back of Mr. Andrews pick-up truck. Let’s try to beat last year’s record weight. Please donate any canned food items that have not expired. Canned foods can be delivered to Mr. Andrews’ and Mr. Depace’s room.

DIVERSITY CLUB FUNDRAISER

The Diversity Club is sweeter than ever! From now until October 30th, we are selling Krispy Kreme donuts to help raise money for our club! Boxes are $8 per dozen. See a diversity club member for details.

CARROLL COUNTY TIMES

East Middle School Students make the news! Several East Middle school students are in the Carroll County Times today featured in “Students’ work helps establish new forest”. Please take a moment to read about the wonderful things our students are doing.

FLUMIST

There continues to be a nationwide delay in the production of FluMist. The November Middle School FluMist clinics are cancelled as a result of this delay. As vaccine becomes available, the Carroll County Health Department (CCHD) will consider walk-in FluMist clinics in mid-December. In order to ensure that your child is vaccinated, parents are encouraged to seek vaccination at your private health care provider, urgent care clinics, and local pharmacies. Please use the link below for the CCHD website for additional information on the Flu vaccine, including the list of pharmacies and clinics offering flu shots in the area.

CAC UPDATE

Update from CACrepresentative on school closing and redistricting

At the October 14, 2015 BOE monthly meeting, the Boundary Adjustment Committee discussed option 3 in more detail and some details of option 4. The Board requested for another work session to be held on October 26, 2015 at 5:30pm to answer their questions on the various options.

Option 3. Closes Charles Carroll, Mount Airy and Sandymount elementary schools; New Windsor Middle School; and North Carroll High School. Redistricts fewer students than option 1 or 2. The Board requested an option that would impact few students by boundary adjustments. Option 3 details and maps has been release for public review and comment.

Option 4. Closes Charles Carroll, Mount Airy and Sandymount elementary schools; New Windsor Middle School. Moves East Middle School (EMS) to Winters Mill High School (WMHS) closing current EMS location and making WMHS a middle school. Keeps North Carroll open and redistricts the WMHS students to Westminster, North Carroll, Manchester Valley and FSK.

The Board and Commissioners agree school closures and redistricting are necessary to address the decreased revenue as a result of the declining student enrollment. The Board have not yet reached a consensus on any of the proposed options. The Commissioners recently voted to ensure any money saved as a result of closing schools and redistricting will continue to be allocated to the budget of the county's public schools.

There is no specific timeline for the Board to make a final decision. Before the Board would vote for any specific school closing or boundary adjustments, public hearings would be scheduled throughout the County.

Provide your feedback to the Board via and the Commissioners via . There is limited time available for public comment at monthly Board meetings.

The next BOE meeting will be held November 11, 2015 at 4:00pm.
