  • Professional development tailored for science and mathematics teachers

The Internet is the most significant of the new technologies that are revolutionising communication and learning in society. 21st Century students are already digitally connected. Computers and the internet are a natural part of our children’s every day life. The LTI – Secondary Maths/Science ensures that educators are sufficiently equipped with skills and information relevant to their respective curriculum specialisation.

Workshop 1 - Web quests and Problem Based Learning focuses on websites that promote engagement and student learning in Maths and Science learning areas. The differences between web quests, problem based learning, and collaborative learning projects are investigated.

Many fascinating interactive online projects are available for middle school teachers to use to stimulate and engage their students. These projects are relevant to students and involve interaction with people all over the world. In the Noonday project students learn about their place in space by conducting shadow measurements and use spreadsheets for collating and calibrating data which they share with students in the northern hemisphere to work out the circumference of the Earth. Other projects involve investigating the boiling point of water in schools all over the world, looking for life on Mars (Design a Martian), taking part in the Acid Rain project while doing experiments on acids and bases. Your students could be designing an energy efficient house or forming a team to design the first Moon Base.

Workshop 2 - Critical Literacyfocuses on strategies and skills that enable effective use of the Internet. Tools and strategies for determining the veracity and origin of websites are examined.

In this workshop participants will explore a range of hoax websites and then
examine a collection of student tools and strategies for determining the veracity
and origin of websites.eg.”Save the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus” information about the endangered Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus and what you can do to save it.

Workshop 3Digital Resources and the Scootle

focuses on accessing and integrating digital resources and learning objects into teaching and learning curriculum programs for classroom use.

Scootle users can:Create Favourite lists (lists of content) and share these with others.Build learning paths for their students. Each learning path has a unique 6 digit code generated.

Students can access digital content such as learning paths developed by their teacher.

Students enter the Scootle URL in a web browser.

Students then enter the unique six digit code in the Student PIN Access area to gain direct access

Links can be embedded. eg. in Word docs, Interactive Whiteboard files, Moodle learning

environments and more.

Teacher lesson plans on use of the Learning Objects and film clips

Workshop 4 - The Invisible Webfocuses on the advanced features of Internet search engines to download interactive Maths and Science games.

Participants will be shown how to use the advanced features of Internet search engines to download interactive learning objects.

(eg )

Engage your students with fun science learning objects and games. There are interactive games, demonstrations and simulations available for almost every science topic. Use the interactive

Explore Learningfocuses on the use of online assessment tools and the inclusion of Maths and Science learning objects to promote engaging teaching and learning.Participants will be guided through a selection of the best online sites for science learning objects.

For example participants will be shown how to use the “Gizmos” from the Explore Learning website with a class of students. The Mouse Genetics gizmo pictured is an excellent interactive animation for engaging students in any study of Genetics.

These learning objects create stimulating learning activities that will keep all students actively on task. Participants should bring a USB drive to save and share objects downloaded during the session.
