Vaughan Elementary School Council Meeting

October 25, 2017

Members in attendance:

Dr. McGill, Dr. Carpenter, Nicola Boone, Nancy Gospodereck, Meghan Smith, Paula Garcia Todd, Zeph Davis

  1. Welcome to the Vaughan School Council:
  2. Meetings will be held at Vaughan throughout the year.
  3. Dr. McGill is working to schedule a few joint meetings with other local councils.
  4. Vaughan’s School Strategic Plan (SSP)
  5. Dr. McGill reviewed the SSP with the council.
  6. Discussed that there are 4 areas for board of education goals
  7. Discussed the idea behind super specials (time for teacher collaboration, data review, plan instruction for the quarter, full day)
  8. Read 180/Systems 44 to support the area of reading (what is it, great growth, possibly have Ms. Jones share results at a School Council Meeting about progress)
  9. Discussed the RTI process for academics and behavior
  10. Update on Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
  11. Dr. Carpenter explained what PBIS is with the council.
  12. Red Tickets are given out for students who exhibit the characteristics of SOAR
  13. 2 winners are chosen from the box each Friday and get a rocket bucket to shop in the school store
  14. Super Student Sundae Mondays for two students per class
  15. Teachers are using positive reminders with the classes.
  16. Student data is reviewed and, as needed, lesson plans can be rolled out and conducted in all classrooms based on what the data is showing.
  17. Vaughan Elementary Foundation-Monster Mash (October 27th at 6:30PM)
  18. Fundraiser for the School Foundation

  21. Beta Club from LMMS is assisting
  22. Vaughan Elementary Parent Coffee Chat with Patti Agatston-Discussion about kids and social media (November 16th 8am)
  23. Possible idea for future coffee talk: Assessments-Mr. Davis shared that the placement of students in 6th grade based on the fall tests completed by 5th graders would be important to share with parents.
  24. Idea for costumes to be warn to school on Halloween
  25. Survey sent out to teachers to get feedback on idea.
  26. Would be used as a fundraiser for Rally Foundation
  27. Guidelines, if approved, would be sent home to parents this week.
  28. Open comment:
  29. Could the Intermediate and Primary Playground basketball court be checked for sand that may be on top making the court slippery?
  30. SPLOST is coming out today to review the primary playground area nearest the parking lot for potential to add a fence.
  31. Switching to the new intercom system which includes phones in each classroom (internet based)
  32. Ideas: Mr. Davis suggested maybe having a “Dad” carpool on a Friday when the weather is cold. Mrs. Gospodareck suggested having the football players, cheerleaders, or basketball players come over in the morning and help kids out of the car like they do at other schools. She will get more info and get back to Dr. McGill.
