Job Description-

Job title / 1-1 Support Assistant - Temporary Position(initially one school term.)
Responsible to / Manager and Chair person
Hours of work / 0 hours contract. Potential hours 9am-12am on selected weekdays. To be agreed.
Location / Littlemore playgroup
Pay and benefits / £7.50 per hour
Holiday entitlement based on hours worked.
A Pension scheme is available.

Introduction to the Playgroup-

Littlemore Playgroup operates from rooms within a Community Centre. We are a small friendly committee run,non profitorganization, that offers places to children aged from 2 to 5 years. The core hours of work are 9am-12am term time weekdays, with additional hours for setting up and associated paperwork. We currently hold a GOOD rating from OFSTED.

Outline of post-

We are currently seeking a pre-school 1-1 support assistant. You will be working with a specific child supporting them and their family. You will ensure that within the day to day demands of the setting, that the child for whom you have special responsibility for, feels individual, cherished and thought about whilst they are away from home.

You will be responsible for implementing work schemes and lesson plans in conjunction with the other staff and the early years special educational needs and disability inclusion team.

Main tasks & responsibilities-

  • Set up, deliver & promote high quality play opportunities, inclusive for the child and suitable to their abilities.
  • Provide 1-1 support for the child and their family
  • Ensuring the safety and well-being of all users, staff and volunteers through the risk assessments for activities, checking equipment, undertaking first line child protection to the users at any given time.
  • To be familiar with and apply the playgroups Health & safety, fire and first aid procedures at all times within your work and to attend training in these areas.
  • Contributing to the accountability of the playgroup through assisting in the maintenance of agreed records including statistics, registers, risk assessment records, contracts, evaluations, accident books, financial transactions etc.
  • Ensuring that the playgroups Equal opportunities policy adhered to.
  • To be aware of and follow playgroups safeguarding Children procedures and take individual responsibility to safeguard & promote the welfare of all children, to be an advocate for children’s right to play, to be listened to & to be safe.
  • To attend meetings and supervision as required
  • To attend training associated with the post as required
  • To uphold the confidentiality of the playgroup, staff, parents, and children at all times.
  • Willingness to learn, attend internal and external training.
  • It is in the nature of the work of the playgroup that tasks and responsibilities are in many circumstances unpredictable and varied. . All staff are therefore expected to work in a flexible way when the occasion arises and tasks which are not specifically covered in the job description have to be undertaken.
  • Candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience inline with the essential criteria.

1-1 support assistant essential criteria-

Essential / Desirable
A Warm and approachable person with good inter personal skills and the ability to communicate with and to relate to children.
An awareness of children’s development and children’s rights.
The ability to work with challenging behaviour.
Some understanding of the issues relating to disability.
Ability to ensure safeguarding and confidentiality policies are implemented.
A non-judgemental and inclusive approach.
Assistant must be able to set up and pack away activities and supervise children.
  • Previous organizational skills
  • Reliable and punctual.
  • Observe, and record achievements in line with the EYFS (Early years foundation stage), to identify child’s age/stage of development.
  • To gain in sight by observing the child, into his/her interests. To use this information with other staff to implement into the weekly planning of the setting.
  • To record and maintain the child’s profile and all about me book, sharing this with parent/guardian routinely, at regular shared lunch or feedback sessions after session, to work with other professionals outside the setting to obtain advice to support the child’s learning.

Adaptable, flexible and open to change.
Assistant must have Good oral and written communication, literacy and numeracy skills / British sign language or Makaton.
Experience of working with young children.
