Vacancy: Exhibitions Intern
Contract: 3 months with the possibility for extension; 2 days per week (one day must be Saturday, and the other day must fall on Tues, Wed or Thurs. Some evening flexibility required.)

SPACE is one of the leading studio providers and visual arts resources in the capital. Founded by artists including Bridget Riley in 1968, SPACE is an arts and educational charity which, for over 47 years, has converted London’s disused and redundant buildings into affordable spaces for artists.
The gallery at Mare Street is host to a successful Artist Commissions and ExhibitionsProgramme that underlines SPACE’s commitment to supporting artists to create and innovate.The Artist Commissions Manager works closely with four artists each year to enable new works, situated both within the gallery and off-site. The programme champions emerging practice and experimental artist-led initiatives that move beyond the traditional expectations of the gallery walls. The programme physically and metaphorically extends past the doors of SPACE intoHackney.
The Role
SPACE has a vacancy for an intern to assist theArtist Commissions and Exhibitions Programme. The role will actively support the Artist Commissions Manager with the current commissions. The existing exhibition at SPACE is by Florence Peake (UK) and the commissions in progress are with the artists: Iván Argote (Columbia / France), Maruša Sagadin (Slovenia / Vienna) and Josh Bilton (UK).
In addition to being involved in general duties related to the overall commissioning process, the Exhibitions Intern will have the opportunity to initiate and develop a series ofpublic programmes in relation to the commissioned projects. The role will further expandthe reach of the projects with the goal to increase depth of engagement, tomaintain interested audiences and offer further context and information to engagenew audiences.The role includes invigilating the gallery exhibition on Saturday.

Essential
- An understanding of SPACE’s mission
- Experience in administration with strong written and verbal communication skills
- Personable attitude and flexible, with hands-on capability
- Highly organized and a keen problem-solver
- Knowledge of and interest in the arts
- Interest in public programmes and desire to work with visitors, artists, educators, academics, community leaders and other relevant professionals to initiate and develop events
Desirable
- Experience in developing and maintaining partnerships with local organisations and audiences
- Interest or experience in digital media for dissemination of programmes and recognising the potential for digital content/provision
- Interest in exploring the event as a flexible format
- Understanding of the charitable sector
