facilities Program – phase ia / USF Polytechnic

V.Academic Plan

As USF Polytechnic planned for the projected population growth and the pipeline of students available for enrollment in higher education, it also rigorously developed a strategic plan centered on regional needs. These needs articulated into specific academic programs of study for USF Polytechnic.

The strategic plan started with over 260 meetings with area business leaders (all sectors), educators, government leaders, clergy, developers, and residents. Numerous focus groups with current and prospective students were held. In addition, recruiters captured information on desired programs for over one year. All this added up to the acknowledgment that USF Polytechnic’s Vision for 2007-2012 is:

The University of South Florida Polytechnic will be a premier destination campus for applied learning, research, and innovative technology

This “polytechnic model” fits regional and community needs by providing:

  • Applied research,
  • Applied technology,
  • Customization,
  • Distributed delivery,
  • Innovation,
  • Interdisciplinary or integrative approaches,
  • Peer learning, and
  • Skills-based learning.

Understanding that the polytechnic approach would best meet Central Florida education needs, all the information gathered from the regional meetings, focus groups and recruitment data was then translated into specific academic programs and required infrastructure. Part of the infrastructure needs would be to utilize the current space (LakelandTechnologyBuilding) at the PCC campus while other programs would occupy the I-4 campus.

USF Polytechnic, in meeting the needs of our region, plans to develop a polytechnic academic focus. These programs are supported by workforce needs and constituent desires. The enrollment plans for USF Polytechnic take into account projected growth, the development of lower level enrollment, as well as the enrollment for the new programs under consideration.
