JOB SUMMARY Teacher of the blind/visually impaired. Provides direct, indirect, and collaborative services to blind/visually impaired students in the Vernal, Utah area. Teaches subject matter utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education, correlated with other appropriate learning activities. Develops lesson plans that incorporate the Utah State Core Curriculum; ascertains learning needs of students in areas of curricula and the Expanded Core Curriculum; adapts curriculum to meet individual student needs; utilizes effective teaching techniques in translating lesson plans into productive student learning experiences which best utilize the time available for instruction. Provides IEP goals and objectives; provides Braille instruction; evaluates needs for low vision students as well as students with multiple disabilities. Understands and uses computers and other technological classroom support equipment in student instruction. Maintains classroom organization and discipline; establishes and maintains standard of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning environment. Devises and utilizes techniques which accurately measure students' progress; evaluates student academic and personal growth, keeping appropriate records, and prepares progress reports. Communicates with parents through conferences and other means, discussing academic and personal progress; interprets school programs. Communicates and cooperates with other professional staff in academic and personal growth areas. Demonstrates professional ethics; conforms to school policies, including attendance, absences, and evaluations; improves professional competence through participation in staff development activities and other professional growth activities; performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS Possession of, or eligibility for a State of Utah Special Education Teaching License. Preference may be given to candidates with a Visual Impairments endorsement. Candidates hired without this endorsement are not considered fully certified and will remain in a provisional status until successfully obtaining it. Must be skilled in teaching, reading, writing, and embossing Braille or be willing to learn; have good class management skills; be willing to work with students of different ages, grade levels, and abilities. This position has strenuous physical requirements such as long periods of standing, walking, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities and possible recurring lifting of students who may have limited mobility and/or personal special needs equipment, requiring the ability to lift and carry over fifty (50) pounds. There are risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. being subject to possible physical attack. Risks are related to the possibility of working with students who are non-compliant, self-abusive, and/or aggressive. Successful completion of criminal background check is required for this position.
SALARY AND BENEFITS Salary based on Teacher Salary Schedule commensurate with education and experience. This position is eligible for a full benefits package including medical, dental, life and long-term disability insurance, a retirement plan, personal and sick leave, and other valuable benefits. The State requires employees to receive their pay through direct deposit or on a payroll debit card account. Tuition assistance may be given to candidates with Special Education Teaching License for Visual Impairments endorsement.
ASSIGNMENT PERIOD This is a full-time appointment, August through June (183 contract days).
