Objectives / Students will be able to:
Identify vocabulary words regarding family and the home in Spanish and Portuguese
Be able to identify cognates in Spanish and Portuguese / Materials / Textbook, Power Point, computer
Time / 1 - 55 minute lesson / Vocabulary / Spanish and Portuguese vocabulary words dealing with the home and family
PROCEDURE
- The topic of this lesson is “My house, my community” and follows the EMC textbook,Aventura, Level 2, Chapter 6 titled, “Hogar, Dulce Hogar”; however, this lesson can be used with any lesson that reviews household/family vocabulary terms.
- The instructor should then review the concept of cognates with students (see Cognate worksheet). As an extension exercise, the instructor can ask students to identify Spanish and English cognates to help students extend their Spanish vocabulary using English (5 – 10 minutes)
- The instructor should activate each student’s background knowledge of Spanish household/family vocabulary using the vocabulary from the text that have corresponding cognates in Portuguese (review the worksheet of related vocabulary and Instructor PowerPoint on Google Docs as a guide. It might be useful for instructors to create their own Power Points of their own families and communities to engage students). (10 – 15 minutes)
- After reviewing the Spanish vocabulary, the instructor will then present visuals of household items and give the students the Portuguese word and have them identify what the correct word would be in Spanish. (For pronunciation assistance, the instructor can review the videos in the Extension Activities section before presenting the lesson). (15 minutes)
- The instructor will then review the correct answers with students as a whole class. (5 minutes)
EVALUATION
Students will research 5 verbs associated with family, home and community in Portuguese and Spanish in small groups and share with the class. (10 minutes)
