Using PuTTY and Xdeep32

  1. Start up the program PuTTy and log in to munro – but this time do not start up Xdeep32. (Some of you will have forgotten your passwords – go to N205 or H205, present your student card and ask them to reset it.) Run vimtutor again and go through sections 3 , 4, 5.1 and 5.2 taking brief notes on the new commands used. Make sure that you try out all the new commands, not just read about them.
  2. Next, use FireFox to go to the web site: , find PuTTY, proceed to the download page and download the program putty.exe by clicking on its name. The program will appear on your desktop. (You can also drag and drop it to a folder on your H: drive as this will keep it around, however this is not necessary.)
Run the version of the program that you downloaded and set up a 2nd connection to munro (call it munro2) with the following settings. (I will check these settings in the lab)
    Click on Window | Translation
    set Font has Xwindows encoding
    Click on Connection | Data
set the Auto-login name to your userid
    Click on SSH
    set Enable X11 encoding
    Click on SSH | X11
    set Enable X11 forwarding
    Click on Session

host name: munro.humber.ca
protocol: ssh (This sets up a secure encrypted connection)
Under Saved Sessions enter munro2 and then click the Save button
Note: These instructions refer to PuTTY version 0.58. An earlier version is installed in the lab. These settings will not be saved for the next time you restart your system.
Test by using the munro2 settings to log in to munro.

  1. Using FireFox in a 2nd tab go to and do a search for XDeep32. Click on the download button and select a convenient mirror to download the file and save it to disk. Run the program xdp40full.exe and follow the instructions, then run the program XDeep32 | XServer from the Start menu.
If the grey window does not fill the screen: click on the small X in the top left corner of the X-Deep/23 screen, select X-Server Menu | X-Server options. Select the Window Modes tab, select Single Window Mode, set the Virtual Screen Width and Height both to –1 (which tells the program to fill the screen.)
Click on OK – the program will give you the option to restart.
Type in connectX in the PuTTY window to confirm that your setup work.
The above instructions should also work on your home machine. If it doesn’t, note what the problems seem to be and bring in your notes for discussion in next week’s class.
