Making Good Decisions

Using either google slides or Prezi, create a presentation over the following categories

  1. General

Where do you want to live (for our purposes, choose a US city)? Include a picture of a landmark from that city.

Do you want to be single or married? Kids? Determine your imagined family size (you + partner + children).

  1. Housing

As far as housing, do you want to rent ______or buy ______?

  1. If renting, what is the median monthlyrent in your selected city for your household?
  2. If buying, what is the median price for a house of the size you’d like?

How much of a down-payment would you need to make to pay 20% of that house?

What would be the monthly housing payments on a loan with a typical interest rate?

Monthly home insurance? (you can find this on places like Trulia, or Zillow).

  1. For whatever housing you chose, calculate the utilities by your location and household size. Include costs for tv/internet.
  2. Give the total monthly cost of housing.
  3. Include an image of a house or apartment you like from your price-range (use Zillow.com). You should have some sentences explaining what you like about the house/apartment.
  1. Transportation

As far as transportation will you have your own car ______use public transportation ______or walk/bike ______

  1. If you plan to own your own car, what kind of car would reasonably like to own?

What would be the monthly payments? Monthly insurance?

  1. If you plan to use public transportation, what kind of public transportation does your city offer and what is the monthly cost?
  2. If you plan to walk/bike…be practical, include point B.
  3. Explain why you chose your mode of transportation and include a corresponding image.

Sundries include personal items like soap, shampoo, etc., as well as cleaning supplies, toilet-paper.These are items and food that you are purchasing from the grocery store and using/preparing at home.

Now that you have an idea of what annual income your household would need at the bare minimum, think about what possible profession you might like.

  1. Complete the career-planning handout.
  2. Summarize in four slides/bubbles your responses to characterize you Interests, Skills, Values, and Personal Attributes. Include images when/where relevant.
  3. Research professions in your three circled Career Areas and create slides/bubble for each that includes:
  4. A summary of the responsibilities associated with that profession. What does that person do at work on a daily basis?
  5. The median salary for someone in that profession.
  6. The qualifications/certifications/education does a person typically need to find employment in that profession.
  7. An explanation of why you chose that profession.
  8. Include, of course, a relevant image.
  1. Reflection

In your final slide, revisit the choices you made throughout this activity. Think about how your desired lifestyle compares to your chosen career field. Would you make different decisions about your desired lifestyle based on your preferred career? Would your significant other also need to work? How might that affect your decisions about having children (or very needy pets)? What are some of the things you need to accomplish for you to have your desired career and lifestyle?
