  1. Label the producers in the food web. Then label the primary, secondary, and tertiary consumers.
  2. Where do producers get energy? Producers get energy from the sun.
  3. What do primary consumers such as the snail eat? Primary consumers it autotroughs/producers.
  4. Which organism receives the least amount of energy? The eagle receives the least amount of energy.
  5. How does the iguana get his energy? The iguana’s energy comes from eating the caterpillar.
  6. Using the food web, create a food chain.

GrassSnailBird Eagle

  1. Put the organisms from the food web in the correct location on the energy pyramid.
  1. If the grasses in the food web are destroyed, which level of organisms will see an effect? Explain.

If the grasses were destroyed, the primary consumers would suffer the most as they would not have a food source. Primary consumers would have greater competition for food, meaning less primary consumers would have enough food to survive. Secondary consumers would then have less food sources to choose from and so on.

  1. If the population of snails increases, what other organisms will be affected?

If the population of snails increases, the grasses will become scarce. Other primary consumers would also have less food. The organisms that eat the snails such as the bird, would see an increase in population.

  1. If the eagle population saw a major decline, what effect what that have on the food web?

If the eagle population saw a decline, the iguana, bird, and rabbit populations would increase. If those organisms saw an increase, the grasses, snails, and caterpillars would see a decline in population.

  1. Define ecosystem.

An ecosystem is a community of interacting organisms and their environment. It includes the biotic and abiotic components.

  1. Define autotrough. What’s another name for an autotrough?

An autotrough is an organism that can make its own food. Another name for an autotrough is a producer.

  1. What is the difference between a predator and prey? Give an example.

A predator hunts a prey for food. A prey is the animal being hunted for food. An example of a predator/prey relationship would be a zebra and a lion. The lion is the predator and the zebra is the prey.

  1. What is a niche? Describe the niche of a hammerhead shark.

A niche is an animal’s role in its environment. The niche of a hammerhead shark would include living in a temperate water environment, being a top predator, and maintaining the populations of prey.

  1. Describe the following biomes:

Desert:

A desert has extreme daily temperature fluctuations, succulent plants, and animals such as lizards and camels.

Taiga:

A taiga has long, severe winters. Animals include moose and black bear.

Rainforest:

A rainforest has heavy rainfall with a warm or temperate climate. Animals include snakes and monkeys.
