Drug crime is nothing new. Smuggling banned or highly taxed goods encouraged people to break the law to make a profit. Laws banning drugs has caused people to smuggle them and customs officers are engaged in a war against well organised drug dealers who have clever methods of smuggling drugs into the UK. Drug mules are people who smuggle drugs into the country in their body – often they swallow condoms full of cocaine, this is dangerous as the condoms can split causing a heart attack. One man was caught with 49 condoms of cocaine inside his body worth around £200,000. In 1977 Richard Kemp and Dr Christine Bott were arrested for producing around £100 million worth of LSD in their home in Wales. In 2006 Operation Capsule resulted in 20 smugglers being arrested after smuggling and dealing drugs across South Wales: the gang leader had been caught fleeing to Spain in a car full of money made from selling drugs. Customs officers have stopped boats trying to smuggle illegal drugs into Britain. Some smugglers hide drugs inside different items, like board games or make up containers, to try to trick customs officers.
