The High Cascades RD on the Rogue River-Siskiyou NF will be hiring 7-10 temporary seasonal forestry technician, wildland firefighter positions for the 2013 fire season. These positions will serve on either a type 6 fire engine out of Butte Falls, OR or on a 6-10 person handcrew out of Prospect, OR. Referral lists will be requested starting Mid-February for GS-3 and GS-4 levels.

The district averages around 30 starts per year primarily from lightning. The engine crew runs seven days per week with staggered staffing and usually is dispatched off-forest once or twice each season. The Handcrew is also responsible for initial attack and averages 2-3 off-forest dispatches each season. Government housing may be available for about $35/week.

The Forest

The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest covers 1.8 million acres in southwest Oregon with a small portion in northwestern California. It encompasses coastal mountains, Cascade Mountains, and the Rogue River from near its origin to where it flows into the Pacific Ocean. The Forest is recognized for its world-class rivers, biological diversity, fisheries resources, geology, wilderness areas, watersheds, and year-round outdoor recreation.

The Forest has five Ranger Districts with offices located in the communities of Powers, Gold Beach, Brookings, Cave Junction, Grants Pass, Prospect, Butte Falls, Ashland, and Ruch. The Forest includes the J. Herbert Stone Nursery in Central Point. The Supervisor’s office is located in Medford. The Forest lies predominately within Coos, Curry, Josephine, Klamath and Jackson counties in Oregon, with some land in Siskiyou, and Del Norte Counties in California.

POSITION INFORMATION:

WORK CAPACITY TEST (WCT) for Wildland Firefighters: This position participates in wildland firefighting activities. Based on the type of work performed, TAKING and PASSING the WCT at the ARDUOUS level is a condition of employment. The Arduous fitness (Pack) test requires completing a three (3) mile hike within forty-five (45) minutes, while carrying a forty-five (45) pound pack. You are strongly encouraged to consult with your physician and begin training immediately if applying for this position. This announcement constitutes the required 30 days advanced notice for testing requirements.

To qualify for a GS-3 position you must have graduated high school or equivalent with 6 months of general work experience or equivalent.

To qualify for a GS-4 position you must have six months of wildland firefighter experience.
