UPCOMING PADDLES FOR 2015

July 25 (Saturday) - RIDE THE SHETUCKET (SHETUCKET RIVER) - The Town of Sprague will provide a free shuttle between River Park and Scotland Dam. There will beNOwater release scheduled thus we will only provide transport when the river is at a level that will naturally provide for easy travel. Participants can put in any time between 10:00 and 12:00. You can ride the river as many times as time and the water level allows. The ride is 4 miles long and takes approximately 2 hours. Paddlers need to have PFD’s and a distress whistle. Since Ride the Shetucket is level sensitive, check the Town website prior to the event for any cancellation postings. (We will be planning for hikes up along the Shetucket, over the Scotland Dam then back down along the Shetucket on days when the river level is too low to kayak (or tube down). www.ctsprague.org

These paddles are for anyone who is interested in paddling, learning a bit about the area’s water access, and is offered to paddlers of all ages and skill levels. July 31 (Friday) – WEBSTER LAKE FULL MOON PADDLE - We will meet at Point Breeze Marina around 6 PM to register, and be out for about an hour paddle to watch the sun set and then enjoy the moon rise and full moon (weather permitting). Moon rise 8:07 PM; Sunset 8:08 PM. Details to follow.

Paddle the Quinebaug River with TLGV Chief Ranger Bill Reid. We'll put in at the boat launch at Maury Bowen Riverside Park in Brooklyn and paddle upstream towards Rogers Dam, then float back to the launch. October 3 (Saturday) – FRENCH RIVER CANOE TRAIL - 9 a.m.

Address: U.S. Army Corps Greenbriar Recreation Area, 591 Main St. (directly behind 581 Main St.), Oxford, MA.

Start with a half hour walk/talk at parking area about impact of invasive plants. Then float 2.6 miles through a low gradient portion of the French River, highlighting the natural features of the river, including animal & plant life in the water and on the banks. End at Hodges Village Dam with transport back to vehicles, return to retrieve your vessel. Limited to 12 canoes/kayaks. Pre-registration required with Glenn Krevosky at 508-769-3659 or

Three rivers come together at Norwich Harbor which is rich with history! Bring your kayak or canoe and PFD for a guided tour of the harbor, the mouth of Yantic Falls and the Shetucket River. October 24 (Saturday) – THAMES RIVER ESTUARY – NORWICH HARBOR STUDY - 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Address: 100 Chelsea Harbor Dr., Norwich, CT.

Take a short cruise aboard Project Oceanology’s Research Vessel, Enviro-Lab, to explore Norwich Harbor and the Thames River Estuary with Seth Yarish, Norwich Free Academy’s Marine Science Teacher, his students and Project Oceanology’s marine scientists. Participants will learn how they are connected to the watershed by conducting water quality tests, using scientific equipment and examining living specimens. Learn first-hand about some of the issues facing the harbor. Dress appropriately. No children under 6 years. You will need to climb a short series of steps to board the boat. The Enviro-Lab is a Coast Guard certified passenger-carrying vessel. Limit 25 adults with accompanying children. Registration required.
