A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in loving memory and honor of Evelyn Davis Newton.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Evelyn Davis Newton, and we pause in silent reverence for her soul.

WHEREAS, Evelyn Davis Newton, a native of Huntsville, Alabama, and longtime Kentucky resident, traversed these earthly bounds on March 23, 2000; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Davis Newton was the devoted wife of C. M. Newton; and no language can express the power and beauty, the heroism and greatness of a mother's love, and Evelyn Davis Newton was the loving mother of two daughters, Deborah Jean Newton of Franklin, Tennessee and Tracy Lyn Chappelle of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and a son, Martin Newton of Lexington; and she was the proud grandmother of five grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Davis Newton graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School in 1948; she attended the University of Miami in Coral Gables on a diving scholarship, and she won several diving competitions in high school and college, and because of her swimming talent, she placed in the 1948 Olympic trials; and later, she taught diving at Vanderbilt University, where her husband coached basketball; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Davis Newton was an esteemed member of the Central Kentucky community; she was a devout member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder; she served on the board of the Chrysalis House, an alcohol/drug abuse treatment facility for women and children; and she was involved in fundraising for the Kentucky Chapter of the Leukemia Society of America; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Davis Newton demonstrated an unwavering dedication to her family and friends, and she was an element of invincible strength to all the lives she touched; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Evelyn Davis Newton has left a void that can never be filled, and she is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. This honorable body does hereby express its utter sense of bereavement upon the passing of Evelyn Davis Newton, and extends to her family and many friends its most profound and deepest sympathy.

Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns on March 24, 2000, it does so in loving memory and honor of Evelyn Davis Newton.

Section 3. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Representative Jon Draud for presentation to the family of Evelyn Davis Newton.
