Course Description
The Preuss School UCSD University Preparation course is comprised of two components for academic and social development. All activities are geared toward personal development, college preparation and exploration, literacy and mathematical skill reinforcement, preparation for standardized testing, and college application and admission. The two components are:
1. KBAR (Kick Back and Read) and KBAC (Kick Back and Calculate). These are segments of the class period in which students read silently or collaboratively practice improving their mathematics skill set.
2. Counseling Curriculum - Values-based, age-appropriate curriculum dealing with decision making, the development of ethics and character, time management, notebook organization, career exploration, college research, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, developing leadership, and contributing back to the community through service learning.
Supplies
Each day students must bring the following materials to class:
· 2 pencils (with lead if needed)· 2 blue or black ink pens
· Lined paper
· Textbooks
· Tutoring materials
· KBAR book / · Scissors
· Planner
· Glue
· Notebooks
· Binder
· A good attitude!
Grades
Grades for University Preparation are based on the following categories and percentages.
25% Organization and Supplies – Binder, KBAR book, materials checks
25% KBAC and KBAR – Completion and effort
50% Assignments – Class work, homework, signed documents, and grade
reports. Any student who is absent can access
www.new.schoolnotes.com to check on school assignments.
Class Expectations
· Maintain a positive attitude and be enthusiastic about learning.
· Understand the importance of your decision to attend The Preuss School UCSD.
· Be respectful of yourself and others at all times.
· Maintain a quiet working environment.
· Listen while others are speaking.
· No eating, drinking (other than water), or sleeping.
· Raise your hand to speak in class.
· Refrain from inappropriate behavior as listed in the student planner.
· Be ready and prepared to start class on time.
Homework Helpers
It is your responsibility to find out about any assignments you missed because of absences. Select two students from the class who are willing to serve as your homework helpers. You can call these students outside school hours for help on assignments or for other academic questions. If you are unable to use the Schoolnotes website, you should contact one of your homework helpers to get the missing assignments.
