Motion discussion point

1. Discussion Point on Postgraduate Students’ Officer being a full-time Sabb role

Anastasia explains motion

Dave speak against. Full sabb should be in welfare as this reflects wider uk and NUS. Don't see it as a full time role it should sit within education role.

A. I haven't seen much focus on undergraduates. There is too much to do. Education committee makes apparent there is a need

Dl. Student trustees have one postgraduate officer.

Lb. there is a lot of things it has to go through, eg constitution change and board of governors. Need full time effort from sabs, also don't know where funding come from. I do like idea but maybe in the future, I'm not sure post grad would be full sabb role.

Aa. Education role focuses on TEF. Can we address on end of the year when there is more time?

Lb. lots of others SUs have fourth but on welfare. President assumes a community role

Aa. What about a postgraduate team?

Sn. Maybe have a panel to talk about issues

Dz. if we make postgrad role full time, they are still hard to engage with because of their workload.

Jv. Break officer role into three roles? So not chase up everything but focus on different things

Al. It could happen, open for discussion. Full time gives you way more than part time

Sn. Lucy at looked to split between research and taught

Dl. Have sub committee

Vote

8 yes 8 no 2 abstain

2.Discussion point on obtaining Green impact reports in Council

Artemis presents motion.

Dl. Dave wouldn't be accountable?

No just to bring forward like finance report

Jv. How often does book get filled out?

Dl. Meant to be within the year

Aa. It means council has more agency on it

Jv. How accessible is report?

Aa. It's hefty. To more about bringing issues to council to be brought forward

Vote

16 yes 0 no 2 abstain

3. Discussion Point on how Nightliners are being represented

David presents motion.

Jen. Have someone to represent night liners

Dd. What about anonymous discussion board? Post statements and questions

Tyler. Is the issue having someone independent but isn't operator

Dd. How is it being recruited for? This role?

Dl. We publicise but rather do word of mouth

Jv. Have two nightline reps?

  1. Policy Proposal for Ethical And Environmental policy

Artemis presents motion

Dl. Transport. Sometimes it's quicker to fly somewhere far e.g. Glasgow. It's also cheaper

Aa. This is already within a SU policy

Jv. Point six it says guidelines will be for event for 200 people but societies may do smaller events and not take down posters. Maybe it should be 100

Dl. Karaoke have more than 100

Aa. It still applies to these events. It's open to interpretation. We would have guidelines for 200

Jv. Do we have facilities like litter picking?

Dl. Yes

Jv. On ethical purchasing, who determines what is ethical?

Aa. Go from NUS ethical suppliers

If had issue with this list we take it to NUS

Vote

17 yes 0 no 1 abstain

  1. Bye law amendment: Student Council

David presents motion

Lb. are halls and first year not just the same? Will you not just have the same problem in recruiting them?

Dl. No you would look at those actively engaging in sports etc and support them and get them develop skills earlier

Jv. 4.5 it looks like they are going to run from 1st April but they won't sit on council till November it means they won't be first years

Mistake

Es. When I was first year one on first priorities is not about council it's about settling in. We are not actively seeking extra things

Dl. That's why it's good to look at those already engaged.mtheres bound to be one or two that one to get straight in

Dd. How many first year students co,e and watch council?

Do.l. They complain but they need to be more active

Jv. For education how many will be elected by first November? Same with activities

Jv. I don't think the timeframe is realistic

Aa. We didn't have this many members until we had councillors. Also everyone's experience of student council and beginning of uni is different

Jd. Can we have election just for first years? For example in January

Tyler. I was a first year last year and a councillor. I think the issue is awareness. I think they would be interested if they knew about it from the beginning

Rc. I think you are looking for too many, maybe numbers can go down

Dl. I just took numbers from halls reps

Rc. If we can't get 9 now how will we?

Dl. We haven't worked on halls this year

Lb. if we can't recruit full number we aren't losing anything

Jv. Could it be like non portfolio?

Dl. I was full campus wide and reflective of campus

Dd. How would you publicise?

Dl. Ask staff and students

Tyler. Do council have any presence on union day? We could have a little stall?

Lb. at the moment we have zero and if we split and get some that is better

Dd. Who sort out publicising?

Dl. Do through voice team and promote, cascade down and not leave it too late

Aa. There's all these logistical issues but we are a creative team and if they think they can do it and get a couple to council let's give them a chance

Dl. On next point, what about chairs automatically elected?

Joe. Can we have vice chair if main chair can't go? What if in more than one role?

Dl. I think chair shouldn't be pto.

Tyler. Aren't councillors supposed to report back to committees

Vote

9 yes 5 no 4 abstain

2. Bye law amendment on officer role descriptions

Lb. are we able to alter officer descriptions in council?

Aa. Yes it's in constitution what the titles are and bye law can add description

Dd. Did you say the officer leaving can change role

Aa. No it has to be someone in the role

Jv. Can it be added in that council need to discuss why role not filled after two year

Aa. Yes bring up in separate vote

Vote

13 yes 3 abstain

  1. Bye law amendment: Mandating officer

Artemis presents motion.

Vote

15 yes 1 abstain

  1. Bye-law amendment: Elections

David presents motion.

Jv. Will three points be for full and part time?

Joe. In terms of doing it like Twitter, you make be able to be v vague with that

Lb. makes it easier for marketing if 144 characters

Joe. Subcommittees be screened as well?

Dl. Yes

Rebecca. Three is too little

Dl. Makes it easier to hold to account

Aa. It makes it easier for officers to do other work she. Actually in role.Eg part b is all about extra things. Having 3 actually focuses people too and we may have diversity

Lb. that number should between 3 and 5

Rebecca. Is it other universities do this?

Procedural motion vote in parts

Jemma. It will help if we are more specific with each point

Vote

8 yes for first point

14 yes 2 no on printing

11 yes 3 no 2 abstain
