Sura Wolff Wengrow New York Museum Travel Grant

The Sura Wolff Wengrow New York Museum Travel Grant provides two UNC Asheville studio art majors (BA or BFA) $750 each to support a four-day trip to New Yorkforexperiences at art museums, galleries, and artists’ studios.The Grant is intended to inspire students making plans for the capstone exhibition and prepare them to pursue a career as an artist after graduation. It is expected that the visit would take place over either Fall or Spring Break, whichever follows the semester of your application’s acceptance.

Eligibility: All declared studio art majors (BA and BFA) are eligible to apply while in the second level of their declared concentration (i.e. Printmaking II). Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA within Art and Art History which can be found on GradPlan. Candidates should also intend to enroll full time the following two semesters.

Completed applications which include both a written statement and a digital portfolio files should be emailed to Suzzy Sams, y the Application Deadline. Late applications will not be reviewed.

Requirements of the Grant:

  1. A typed written statement (500 words or less at the bottom of this application)
  1. Artist portfolio of 10 images (PowerPoint).

The statement should address the following three topics:

Describe how you believe visits to museums and galleries in New York will deepen your artistic practice and contribute to your plans for your senior exhibition. Include information about museums and galleries you have previously visited. What museums and galleries would you want to see in New York? Are there specific works/artists/genres you want to study?

Describe how you will document your experiences during the trip and follow-up presentation on campus. Documenting the trip is required, but the format for documenting your trip is up to you. Some possibilities include live blogging during the trip, keeping a written journal, keeping a sketchbook or photo/video journal. How you plan to document will be evaluated as part of your application.

You will also be required to share your experiences on campus after you return. Describe how you will do this. Some possibilities include, posting your written journal, sketchbook or photo/video journal on the Department of Art and Art History website or making a live presentation on campus at the UNCA Undergraduate Research symposium.

Selection Process:

Applications will be reviewed by a committee of Art Department faculty and one outside evaluator. Decisions will be based on both a student’s artistic promise and academic record. Preference is given to students who have not visited major museums in major cities.

Financial Aid:

If selected you will receive $750 to support transportation to and from New York, housing in student accommodation, and admissions to two museums, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. You will be responsible for meals and other incidentals.

If you need to provide detail images, or multiple points of view for 3-D work, please do not exceed an additional 10 images.
