  1. Information for New and Returning Nursing Instructors
  • New instructorsto Fairview or new to an individual unit must complete 16 hours of orientation on the patient care unit prior to bringing students. See separate document provided to university for updated patient care unit manager contact information.
  • Electronic Health Record Learnings: Review the EPIC Co-signing tip sheets for the MAR’s and flowsheets/notes (see separate documents provided to university). Nursing faculty must co-sign nursing student entries for documentation/flowsheets and on the Medication Administration Record. Fairview has had an EPIC upgrade recently. The updated EPIC e-learning moduleswill be sent separately to the universities. The modules may only be accessed via a password-protected university website.
  • PYXIS: A PYXIS instruction card is available. It has been sent to the universities. The instructor must be able to guide the students’ individual use of the new PYXIS ES medstations.Only instructors orstaff RN’s can remove controlled substances. Per policy, the person who removes the controlled substance must administer the medication. The upgraded PYXIS ES medstations have been implemented at UMMC/UMMCH.
  • Required Learning: Review theRequired Learning if you are a new instructor. Required Learning must be completed annually. Documentation forms must be filed at the college or university. The external website is updated automatically every January 2ndby the OD and Learning department. An additional HIPAA module has been added for all students as well as a Workplace Violence module. There are currently five totalrequired modules to review each calendar year.
  • Policies are available on the Fairview Intranet. The Intranet is available on any patient care unit computer but cannot be accessed off-site by external persons. Each instructor will have access to the network with a formal code.

Network, EPIC,PYXISCodes: Student codes must be requested by completing the Student Request Form. Each university has been sent that form. Please use version 14.At least three weeks’ notice is needed by IT to assign codes for EPIC and network.EPIC and network codes are universal. Additional time is needed for Pharmacy to assign the PYXIScodes. PYXIS access is campus-specific (East Bank or West Bank) and is not universal.Log-in’s for network and PYXIS are the same as well as the initial password – this containsupper-case first and last initial of the student’s name and the last four numbers of the social security number and then lower-case “fv”. To access a computer on the units (network log-in), students will need a standard Fairview ID (i.e.: cbecker1). The log-in for EPIC will be a different student ID such as cbecker1sn.Please note that students do not have access to the swipe-in function called Imprivata. This is why there are two different login codes.

  • Blood Glucose Meter: Those who need glucometer codes must complete the competency checklist. If the students do not need glucometer access, let the clinical partner know.Normally, behavioral and Peds units do not grant glucometer codes. Glucometer codes are universal to both campuses. Students do not use their badge bar codes to access the glucometers but must use an assigned five digit number. Fairview may be implementing new glucometers in the future. I will let you know if that occurs.
  • Locked doors:Students and instructors will be given access to locked med rooms, stairwells, kitchens, hallways, buildings based on unit requirements and approvals. Specific unit requests will help to determine if various accesses can be given. The request is completed by Fairview in collaboration with the Security Department. Students and instructors must have their proximity reader card badges in the system firstbefore they can be given any accesses by Security. Please allow at least 24 hours for access. Students will not receive any accesses the day that they receive their badges. Badges do haveexpiration dates. If the badge has expired, have the student return to Parking.
  • Posting names on units: The names of the nursing students, instructor name, and instructor contact information must be posted on the patient care units. This is in the event there is a question about nursing student documentation and/or medication administration.
  • Welcome/welcome back to University of Minnesota Medical Center and University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital.
